There are a few myths about SIS out there in the scrappy world that I would really like to clear up...and please, I hope this is taken in the spirit that it is intended: to spread truth about this place and myself and to also make an attempt to incite some change in this place...positive change...NOT "sticky sweet" change, but a change that will evoke authenticity and an environment where people feel like they can be honest and sincere without fear that someone will think they're bursting the precious bubble that encases our beloved SIS world.
I know this is all very random, but I'm feeling all "Jerry McGuire" right now...
Myth #1 "SIS is drama-free" How many times can I type "LOL" without you all thinking I've gone a little batty? A website with over 12,000 members, 99.9% of which are women, "drama free"...as if that were even a possibility!! Clearly, we aren't drama free...I myself have been ensnared in several "episodes de drame" (that's French, hehe). The beauty of this place is that for the most part, people who are involved in conflicts are 1)honest about their identities and 2)usually willing to handle the situation respectfully and come to a resolution. See, that's more like real life...I mean there just aren't that many people who would go up to someone's face and tell them to F*^& Off at the smallest provocation. But that is very close to what happens regularly on other sites. That's beyond cowardly, and beyond FAKE.
Myth #2: "JJ Is Serving Kool Aid" I think this is my favorite. The first time a troll posted here about Kool Aid I cracked up because I kinda thought they were showing how old they were...I mean I BARELY remember Jim Jones and I'm 37! Apparently, though this phrase is used quite a lot when referring to SIS. And actually, I don't know if the thought is that I'm the one giving out the Kool Aid or if it's like we're all just preparing our own because of all the (perceived) fake sweetness, or what, but dude, I'm nice and all but I am actually not really a sweet person at all. If you asked most people who know me personally...brb, a really good Kenny Loggins song is on whatever show Bob is watching in the other room and I must do arm movements and sing, "(singing) I'm Free! Heaven help the man who something, something..." Was that song in Footloose? Oh my gosh, Footloose is the best movie EVER...ok, sorry about that, I'm back now. Anyway, if you asked people who know me personally, the words they would use to describe me are "opinionated, blunt, open, funny (ok, I HOPE they would say that one.) so certainly no batch of Kool Aid that I would whip up would cause any kind of fake, icky sweet behavior. I'm just sayin'. I'm a lot of things that make people not like me, but I am always sincere (ok, like 97% of the time...but like the 3% of insincerity is mostly when I tell my husband how sexy he looks in his ugly shirts that he buys at Costco, or when I tell my 8 year old daughter how delicious her cookies are.)
Myth #3 "If you say something Big SIS doesn't like, you get censored" OK, I guess this is partly true...I mean I seriously hate when people are disrespectful, which is kinda ironic because I used to be incredibly disrespectful as a child and even into early adulthood, just ask LG and Mona...however, I hate it now. Every person deserves to be treated with respect...that doesn't mean you have to agree with them, but you should respect them, if for nothing else but because it will never reflect badly on you if you are always being respectful. I will say this though...this is a free website, but it's not like a "free speech" website...I mean I pay for the bandwidth of this site each month and I guess I don't see why I am obligated to pay for storage space for posts, comments and layouts that I find offensive or vulgar or just plain mean...see, there ya go...not sweet, but honest.
Um, there might be some more myths I want to bust, but I really have to go finish packing for Chicago...KA and I leave tomorrow morning and it's almost 1:00am. I'm not sure why I had the urge to post this...probably because I always find things to prevent me from packing...I hate packing...and unpacking...and driving long hours...but I DO like shopping for scrappy supplies... hehe.
Peace-JJ

JJ, anyone who is around long enough to get to know us, realizes all of the things you've said. I know that you feel the need to defend yourself and your lovely website, but the people who say those sorts of things aren't the kind of people who generally care to listen to your side of the story anyway.
have a fabulous trip, love love love. d

Dude, Deanna, I was totally counting on you to start the slow clap! LOL But what you say is so true...I seriously doubt any haters are going to read this and say "oh man, I SOO love that SIS place now!" LOL Maybe I wasn't saying it so much for them, but kind of for some of our SISters who I fear feel a little bit like they can't always express their true feelings, or feel that they have to hold back unpopular opinions so that they don't "rock the boat" or whatever, or maybe they feel left out if they're not all "lubby dovey" all the time :) I just really don't like the fact that we have this reputation for being fake because we're so nice all the time, and I want to make sure that I'm not setting some kind of tone that makes people feel that they need to act a certain way on here...does that make sense? Prolly not...I should have remembered what happened to Jerry McGuire when he passed out his memo...or it wasn't a memo, was it? What did he call it? LOL
And thanks for the affirmation on the funny thing, TL, you're always so supportive. ;)
D, just mwah mwah mwah!
Can I buy you all something pretty while I'm in Chicago?
JJ
P.S. All of that love was from my heart and totally sincere! ;)

Well JJ now you are fired from putting out this manifesto - no wait - you can't be fired so go with it.
Personally I like respectful - being respectful of others is not sickly sweet - it's decent behavior. Remember when you were taught - if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. I don't understand why that bugs people. It's manners, just proper manners.
As for the kool aid - it's a free website that I can leave anytime - you aren't dragging me to Ghana or taking all my money (um wait - my hubby might argue with me on that point - but at least I get supplies in return). Not sure I understand the kool-aid bit at all.
You can't please everyone, starting a biz is tough and people stumble and fall all the time, it's how you get back up that matters. Hang in there.
Oh and clap clap clap

it's not a memo! it's a mission statement!
one of the things i love most about this place is that we have to stand behind the crap we say - there is no coming in here and anonymously saying junk we'd never say to someone in real life. it is very honestly one of the things i hate most about the internet - people behaving in ways that they would NEVER have the courage to behave in if they weren't hiding behind a monitor and keyboard.
you know this, but i'm going to say it for public eyes now. i haven't always agreed with everything you've ever said or done. THE HORROR! but i have NEVER felt like that would cost me something. i am always amazed at the amount of respect and kindness i am shown - even when i say things that might escape my fingers before i think them through long enough. :)
i know that this is not my show. i'm not payin' the bills and my arm isn't being twisted to stay here. i don't put so much of myself into this site because i have to - i am here because i choose to be. i LOVE being a part of this site and having that little star next to my name makes me proud. even when we disagree. even when the crap seeps in. even when things are rocky and not all full of sunshine. actually, truth be told, it has made me appreciate things even more -- because it affirms why i'm here.
i am thankful for what you've created and continue to create here. i am now, and will forever be, grateful for the chance you took on me because it has taught me and forced me to grow and be me. our community? they are the reason i share myself and my love and my time. and i KNOW that can be said for so many of us.
for me, the good that can be found here - no matter what people say about us - is far greater than the crap that can be found most places. i am proud to be a member of this site. even if i wasn't an f-girl, you can bet your ass i would say the same things.
(sorry for saying ass, jj.)

I'm off to bed...good night my fair ladies...and one dark one...love you mi-jo...OK, now if that attempt at spelling a Spanish word doesn't make you seriously wonder about me, then I think my Mission Statement will be a huge success.

If everyone would remember this quote (which was mentioned earlier by deanna), "You don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all", you wouldn't have to feel like you need to defend yourself. I personally LUB you JJ and my LUB for you has intensified after SISiversary. You seriously rock!
Like I have said before, JJ- this is your baby (SIS site): you do what you need to do to keep the peace and keep your "baby" healthy.

I have not been here too long, but I have to say I have found a community where I can be involved, make friends, laugh, be silly, and make art. I feel welcomed here and cannot say that yet about any other site I've tried to get involved with. I find it hard to explain to people why I'd rather be at home online on Friday night playing games with my SISters....oh well... I just want to say thanks for all you do! :)

Yo JJ!! did you know that I love you? yep...I do. and I can say from the bottom of my heart (and baby's heart) that being without access to SIS sucks! (hopefully I won't have to endure that again) I have never found a site that I have loved more, and people who I have considered better friends. Yes, there is drama at times, but hey, that is what women have... lots-o-drama! This is probably the most drama free site out of all of them, and that is what is the coolest about it! I adore you beyond belief, and thank you for giving me some of my favorite friends too!
