alright girls and guys!
today i have a tutorial / challenge

we've altered the outsides of books
now watch from start to finish as i alter the inside...

" title="

but let me tell you right now.
this tutorial / challenge
is all about playing with materials
pushing yourself to do something you've never done before
without expectations
without worrying about the end result
although i'd love to see your end result
if you want to share!

supplies i used :

vintage music book, gesso, gel medium,
white/pink/parchment hued paints,
vintage fabric, scrap & vintage papers, misc embellies

step 1 : find a book and gather your supplies

" title="

" title="

step 2 : adhere 2-3 pages together with gel medium.

" title="

step 3 : apply a coat of gesso for a muted background to build off of

" title="

" title="

step 4 : start building up your background by placing random papers, elements, etc as YOU desire. i use gel medium as a paste, but you could also use modge podge too.

" title="

" title="

" title="

step 5 : apply gel medium, gesso or a whitewash of paint over the layers if you wish to subdue colors... or don't. remember, this is all about you and what YOU are creating!

note : i generally like to do a base build up with papers and then whitewash them with gesso and gel medium. then i create the final elements using the same papers, without the whitewash. it creates a cohesion since the paper design subtly shows through the whitewash.

" title="

step 6 : start applying your final elements as you desire. this is also a great time to add writing, images, etc.

" title="

" title="

" title="

step 7 : finished....

" title="

i hope this has helped show that the act of creating for the sake of creating
is just as important as planning is
it can push you to open new design avenues
that you never thought you would try.

have fun!
xoxo

Once I find a book to alter, I'll have to play around!

i also forgot to add
you can of course
use all of these tips and techniques
on a canvas as well
or a large {or tiny} piece of chipboard
the possibilities are endless!

Where can I get gesso?

any art supply store will sell it
or a craft store {i purchase my items at michaels}
