Whenever I try to doodle or write a title on my LO's, it always seems to come out a bit 'flat'. It just sort of blends in with the surroundings and it doesn't attract the attention I am aiming for. Does anyone have any pointers about making doodles and handwritten titles 'pop' more? I am thinking materials, techniques, any advice you can think of!
Thanks!

Did you try drawing on a piece of paper that is a contrasting color and then cut it out to glue on your layout? Hope that helps.

Thanks SISters!
Rachael > I tried that around the journaling of this one... with a grey paint marker. Text still looks nitty gritty though and the title is vague. Any ideas how to 'rescue' this LO? Input is appreciated! (Sorry to turn this from a generic Q&A into a personal thing ;-))

Fauve > I mostly use Posca's these days. I find it really depends on the surface if these do the trick or not. I have the white signo too... and it's really great for journaling and doodling, I agree!

Framing the doodles with a doodled frame or dots makes them pop a bit more too.

If you tend to doodle with a black pen or marker, maybe you could outline with colored pencil or a fine tip colored marker- kinda CD Mukosky-ish. I like her whimsey style.

Your layout is cute! I would probably outline that title with black or a good white pen - like the signo we got in one of the SIS collections. I think since your colors are already kind of light, though, I would go with (thin) black to really bring out that title...and it would go with the black in your pic too.
HTH! :)

You could also try embossing or putting your title on a piece of cardstock and using foam tape to raise it up off the page. Arrow embellishments pointing to the title would be cute too!

I'm not a black person, as in fan of the color black I don't mean ethnic color. I like to use pink, blue, purple, glitter pens whatever compliments my layout, but swtiching over to black makes your title and journalling stnad out and not fade away. To make certain words pop I draw a double box frame around one word and then color the frame with pencil crayons. Or you can make each letter of you title 3-D/puffy and color in the spaces with a pencil crayon.
Maybe on your doodling you could use some glitter pens or dimensional glue/paint to add some depth.
Hope this helps you POP!

Well ya'll know I'm addicted to some sharpies (black please) but what I'm really digging nowadays is doodling as a layer. Meaning, maybe using some stickers or thickers (enabling, I know) or the many suggestions here (ie, cutting out letters from cardstock, or even from fabric...or stamping the title) and using your doodling as a layer. Like for your layout, I'd suggest making the title bigger so it stands out more from your journaling.
My first and easiest I think choice would be using some stickers. They don't even have to be all one color. Using stickers that go with the colors of your layout, you can tie them together as a title with your doodling (ie, outline the letters, maybe add some fun little circles or polka dots to each of the letters).
If you don't have any alpha stickers (or thickers) to make your title with so that it is "different" from your journaling, maybe get a set of the foam alphabet letters you can get in the craft section at Wal Mart or at Micheals (I think I always got mine on sale for like $1.50 or $2.00--they come on a "sheet" of foam and they are perforated so you can just cut/tear apart each of the letters). Stamp them in a color that blends in a bit with your background paper (I like to use acrylic paint...a bit more "mushy and sloppy" but a heavier look to it) and then to kind of tidy it up after it's dry, then go in and doodle by outlining the letters you just stamped?
And I loved the suggestion above about embossing the title. That would be totally cool too. I'm on an embossing kick lately (smile).
It's a great layout and lots of great tips that I'm going to have to give a whirl sometime soon.

I love love LOVE glaze pens. I do almost all of my journaling in them. Popping journaling off the page with foam tape can bring attention to it. Using different PPs for titles and things like that might also help.

Your page is lovely. I wonder if you might like to look for pages you like and try to figure out how they did it? I use black and white pens the most. I find it difficult to do a handwriting title and make it quite as bold as I would like it to be...but I do mix it up. For example I used both letter stickers and pen work on this page.

After you've done your doodle or title try going over it with puffy paint or just outlining it!

Love your page, and the colors you used! I find that when I have a layout with lots of color, black or dark brown titles work best. Matting the layers helps, too. It depends on the paper the letters will be on top of.

I use puffy paint pens or slick paint pens... the ones you can buy to decorate fabric. I love how it adds dimension to my LOs. You can get them at Walmart for a couple bucks with a lot of colors to choose from. My other favorite doodle pen is the sharpee extra fine in white. I love doodling... :-)

there are a lot of great ideas in here! framing your title in a doodled frame, using a different color/piece of coordinating cardstock (and then maybe even using pop dots to really make it, well POP.), puffy paint pens, etc...
i like using a darker pen for a lighter LO and a lighter pen for a darker LO. for example, i love your doodle on the LO you posted, but i would have changed the ink to a darker purple.
pens are really important too. here's what my experience has taught me thus far: ~the white singo is fabulous, but discontinued. ~the american crafts' ultimate gel pens are growing on me. the medium tip isnt too broad and has a nice soft feel when you're using it. the white ac pen isnt as bright as the signo and definately has to be traced to get it to really show up. the ink sometimes needs to be tapped down in these guys. ~ac's slick writers are ok for slick surfaces/papers (think acrylic and/or bazzill bling), but i would sooner use a sharpie for this. partially because sharpies come in a buttload of awesome colors these days and partially because i already have a ton of sharpies and dont want to spend the $$ all over again on the american crafts pens. ~i love gelly rolls, BUT they are unrealiable IMO. i always store these pens upside down and they eventually work for me, but sometimes it takes a few months before i can really get one to work. the plain black ones (fine point) dont seem to have this problem, but the colored ones do and the white, well, sucks imo. the gelly roll company is pretty good about their customer service and replacing pens that dont work properly. (you return the pens to them and they send you not only replacements but some freebies to at least cover the cost of your shipping) ~sakura (the company who makes gelly rolls and glaze pens) also have a "puffy" pen called souffle and it almost looks embossed. i like those pretty well, but you're limited on colors and you have to buy the entire set from what i've seen and it can run anywhere from 15-20 bucks. ~i also am a big fan of the zig writers, but i dont like the fine tip on a felt pen for doodling. the large tip on the other hand for a large word or title is great! ~black fine tip sharpies are wonderful and i'm really itching to try the new pen they just came out with. the one that apparently doesnt bleed through ~i've played with white out pens with some success ~doodling with a ball point pen can be pretty fun and definately lends itself to a "i just doodled this in 2nd period english" feel.
asside from pens, having a doodle idea book around isnt a horrible way to help your doodling. i actually have a few pages in my scrap journal dedicated to doodling inspiration. just a couple rough doodles lifted from random places. when i feel a LO needs something in this dept but i dont know what, i flip to these pages and almost always find inspiration.
good luck with your doodles!!!

I love love LOVE glaze pens. I do almost all of my journaling in them.
I second that (or third or 4th it). From looking at your layout it seems maybe you need a brighter color. Everythig is in great shades of blue and green and then the writing seems a soft purple. I would go over it in black or a dark blue.
Also I sometimes use Glossy accents to go over doodles or writing (if it is large). It added a shiny layer to anything and makes it pop!
