First off, I have just discovered this website and, no lie, it has revolutionized the way I think about scrapbooking. You all are so inspiring!
Okay, so my question is this. I always thought you shouldn't use anything on your scrabooks unless they are acid free, etc. Here I have seen people using newspaper, construction paper, and whatever else is handy. It looks awesome . . . but are there any guidelines, anything I shouldn't use? Is that all safe to use? Because I am ready to go on a scavenger hunt around my house for things to scrapbook! Anything I should AVOID?
Thanks so much!

ALso, I do carry a can of that neutralizer stuff with my at all times!!!

I don't use too much out of the box items. I include tickets or various things from the event I scrapbook. I guess I am more traditional, and want what I create to be around as long as possible.

you can go either way really. I am more of an "emotional/I like the photo scrapper" than an "event" scrapper, so I just use what inspires me.
I do know that you can buy Archival Mist (I think that's what it's called) to spray anything you aren't sure about down to neutralize the acid, etc.
I never do that. I just glue and stick, glue and stick.
but, it is really about what YOU want out of your albums. If mine last until I am a silly old lady..that is all I need. If not, oh well.

anything goes for me - i have some books that were made when i was really careful about acid-free, but lately i am worried about it a lot less, if at all. if you have duplicate pictures, you could play with the dupes, and keep the originals for archival scrapping, maybe.
have fun and welcome!

Remember, there is always archival mist if you want the best of both worlds!!
When you have been scrapbooking for 10 years of more, it is hard for the brain to let go of the rules, but I have.
And I just don't care... I mean, all the pictures I use will be on cd (or whatever new format they come up with) and they can be reprinted.
Scrapbooking is changing so much... there are less rules, more fun and yes, masking tape will probably discolor the picture next to it, but if your worried, don't let it touch the picture or "mist" it. :)

I really haven't cared about keeping my albums acid free. 80% of my photos are all digital, and so I figure I have the option of multiple copies down the road if I want to do something different, or the page somehow gets ruined. My mom has a lot of photos that aren't digital, and I encourage her to use Archiver's Mist on the papers and embelishments we don't know about. She hasn't, but it is out there if you do have concern!
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I scan old photos and then use copies so I dont have to worry about acid free. If you make sure the non acid free things are not touching photo and you keep your layout in album pockets they should be ok. I like to think its better a photo is in a layout than sitting in a box/cupboard/drawer never to be looked at for years.

Welcome to SIS!
This is a really big brewing debate. It totally depends on your personal style and what you are trying to achieve through scrapbooking.
Ask yourself:
1. Is this something I want for generations to come (or are you okay with stuff fading, etc)? 2. Does the fact that some of the non-acid free stuff can degrade my photos worry me (do you have back-up photos)?
I like being more freestyle with my stuff and work with whatever inspires me. I do have extra copies of my photos (and backed up on CDR just in case), just in case the photos fall apart over time.
As someone suggested above - the Archival Mist is really helpful and I use that, especially if the paper is questionable, I use newsprint, or if I bring any cardboard element in. It just makes sense to me to make my scrapbooks something I can share in the future, not just for the here and now.
Anyhow, it's totally personal and something you can have fun with! GOod luck and can't wait to see what you do :)

Thank you so much for all the responses. I didn't know about the Archival Mist, and will have to check that out. Can you get that anywhere like Walmart, or is that just at scrapbooking stores?

I guess I am more timid and protective of my photos (still working on breaking outside the box) but if I really want to use a cliping, I'll photocopy it onto acid free paper, if nothing else it will not deteriate in my book later on (although that look might be cool).

I've wanted to buy the archival mist, but I'm not sure what brand to go with. Is there a difference? Is one brand better then the others or are they all pretty much the same?

Welcome abroad.
Let me tell ya. I don't care if something is acid free or not. I never use my original pictures anyway. And if it fades away well my girls can replace it with a new one LOL
Really, anything that's not perfect catches my attention more. If there are brown spots on a photo, it will look much better i think. So i don't need to use distress ink because they will be distressed all by themselves over the years...

Welcome! If you worry about acid-free, you can do what a friend of mine does. She has the "for posterity" books that she uses only acid-free products and those are the ones she wants to make sure will last. Then, she has another album where she is free to play with whatever product she wants. That one is all about the art and just having fun. So, she gets the best of both worlds.
I have seen Archival Mist at Target, so I suspect Wal-Mart might carry it as well.
Have fun!!

I think a lot of it depends on where you're coming from. Lots of tips on archival mist and whatnot, but I pretty much got into scrapbooking in the start to do just that--keep a bunch of scraps in books. Ticket stubs, post cards, etc. Last year I saw a book I had from when I was 11 and I LOVED looking at the memories. It briefly crossed my mind that if I wanted my grandkids to be able to look at it too, I should do something about making sure that was available. For some folks, they want the actual hard item (the ticket stubs) to be around. But we're a pretty geeked out family so everything I have is digitized (either scanned or photographed) and we've gotten pretty good at it to be able to have that stand in for the memories we want to keep. So with my pages, I use anything, photograph it, back it up lots of times over and still have the memories.
However, R made me a book to propose to me. And that was the first time in my scrapbooking life that I thought "OH...I wish EVERYTHING in my scraproom was "safe" so that when he got the urge to make something significant like that, I'd be sure it was all safe and going to last for a long time." That said, for my wedding album, I'll probably take those kinds of precautions and do a digital scrapbook and make sure it is printed correctly, but for wedding photo prints, it's all game. Just about making sure that somewhere, somehow, I have backed up my photos so that "no matter what" (planning for the unknown is kind of hard), I will at least have the photos to go back to.
Welcome and have lots of fun!
