okay, all you mini bookers
for some reason i am afraid of the mini book so
please help!

after you decide on the theme - do you get
you coordinating supplies together or do you just
go with the flow?
or have you chosen supplies and then decide on your theme?

can someone walk me thru their thought process?

thanks!
mel

I've done all of the above, but I tend to like to pile up supplies first or set a template of sorts for pages (like each page will have a journaling block, strips of pp and an embellie or 2). If your nervous about getting going, having coordinating stuff or a template might help you ease into a pattern or rhythm. If I have a set theme in mind, I might select photos for each page first and put them in page order before deciding on supplies.
I sometimes look at minis as a way to play with or try new things too, because the smaller format makes new techniques less intimidating. For me, it's all about having fun and creating a finished book in a day or two. Once you try one, I bet you'll be hooked!

this is a great way to get started too
I use a lot of scraps and odds and ends in minis

go with the flow but usually try to use some of the same colors and elements througout the book

I have done the whole coordinating thing throughout the book - I myself get bored with this format. It looks nice but it doesn't hold my attention.

Don't get hung up on rules, just go for it!

I think you can do whatever appeals to you (flow or pile it up) -- but since you said you were overwhelmed with the process here is an idea that might help it not be so intimidating.

1. Decide what you want the book to be about.
2. Determine the size of your book and number of pages (this helps you know how much paper you will need)
3. Go on ebay or another scrapbooking site and order a paper pack of a line of paper that you really like and fits your theme. (this guarantees that you will have plenty of matching papers and die cut elements)
4. Pick your pictures...I use mostly wallet size pictures that I have printed at the same time I get 4x6 prints...but look at some of your 4x6 prints too because they can be cut down to fit.
5.Here is where I begin to let a little bit of flow happen. Having established the number of pages and the pictures I want to use -- I kind of spread the pictures out to tell the whole story. This allows me to have some pages with more journaling...some with less.
6. Start at the beginning -- build a foundation for a two page spread and then use the same principles of design that you would for a larger layout -- just downsize it. This way each couple of pages will have a different look -- but be coordinated because of the paper and elements that you use. With the smaller pictures the proportions will seem similar. Don't be afraid to cut down die cuts to create better sized elements.
7, Continue through the book until finished.

Hope this helps..

Hi, I'm hooked on Mini Books as I find them so versitile. I have recently finished a "Flower" album with recent photo's of my Grandaughters!!!! A "Jigsaw" album about a visit to the seside one day and a " Mini Book" about a holiday I took with my eldest Grandaughter which ended up lovely and thick!!!!

I usually get my photos together first, decide on the colours and then just do whatever comes to hand .... love them, you get hooked so easily and they make great gifts :)

oh, I was bad. I have never done this before and I saw the Love, Elsie stuff and grabbed her mini's and some coooordinating paper. I was too excited to think. I have never thought of using my left over stash! Blushing while I typed that rediculous sentence!

i took a mini book class w/ ali edwards last october & she gave some fabulous tips..

the one i liked the best was

decide on a "formula" for your mini book & follow it through the entire book...it lends a cohesive look to the project & makes it sooooo much easier to put together

so for instance for that class "the formula" was

the right side of the book had a 1 1/2 " strip of pp, a boarder sticker, a 5 1/2" block of pp & a journaling block put somewhere on that side

the left side of the book had one 5x7 photo & a strip of pp @ 1/2 - 3/4"

we added some things in between the pages like some tags or fun stuff, but the basic formula stayed the same.

& the mini is fantastic!

i've repeated this "formula" approach many times & just change it up based on my theme or my product.

have fun!!!
i LOVE minis :)

I usually have ideas for mini books, so I know the theme. I tend to make mini books and add my pictures later. (I think this is because I sell tons of mini books where people add their pictures after they buy them.) I usually base my colors on the scraps of papers I have available. I coordinate my scrap papers and than decide what type of mini album I want to make. I really try to use my scraps rather than full sheets of paper if I can. Than I just go with the flow of them. I decorate each page differently and embellish away.

I usually like to stick with the same line for a mini book. I just like the consistancy of it.

However, remember one thing.... and I tell this to all my students too....

THERE ARE NO RULES IN SCRAPBOOKING! :)

I usually will grab all the stuff I want to use, grab my mini book and go to town! I end up grabbing other stuff I want to use. I really like kits to make a mini book because you have so many things included in them.

I've done mini books both ways.
I just did one of our family for my
m-i-l and I seriously had different
patterns of paper on different sheets,
nothing matched or went was part
of a kit and it turned out awesome..

But formulas work great too. and i've done
a few with that.
You'll just have to play around and see
what you like better!!!

the few mini-books I've made have been hybrids. I design them in PS then print out and embellish. It's been very helpful for me to plan the pages first then print them out!

That is such a great idea! Since it's a mini I can print the pages on my computer (I don't have a wide format printer so I can never print 12"x12"). Gotta try this!
