Hey don't be afraid! We're here to help...yeah, we're all certified scrapbooking addicts ourselves but that doesn't mean you have to be...we just want to help you get some of your photos and memories and thoughts all down in one place. Seriously, we're all about helping people with baby steps...it's refreshing to meet people who are new to scrapbooking and are open to new ideas and philosophies about the hobby. (For example, you're NEVER behind...we don't believe in that stuff here, it's silly...you're not allowed to try and get "caught up").
So post any questions you have and one of the Fashionistas or another SISter will surely give you a hand.
Blessings,
Jeanette (aka Big SISter)

OK, I'll go. I am not new to sbing. But I always end up using a piece of white cardstock. Which is ok, but I have tons and tons of pp that I have trouble using because I can't figure out how to mix it on a lo.

Ooooo Oooooo, I have another one. I have also purchased tons of acrlyic stamps and could use some ideas on using them as I hardly ever get them out of their packages because of lack of ideas on what to do with them. I mean, I know how to stamp, just working them into a lo is giving me some problems. Thanks, Beth

I think this is a great question! I recently had this discussion with a friend who isn't comfortable stepping away from collection packs and my advice was to start small. Take baby steps!!!
Maybe to start with you'll use a little patterned paper as your background. Polka dots are a great option! Pretty soon you'll be comfortable enough to use a plaid or a swirl or a different pattern. If you gradually challenge yourself to step a little outside your comfort zone, you'll find that in no time you're using everything BUT white cardstock. (I would like to mention that I love love LOVE white cardstock--it's very 'hip' right now especially!)
Let me know how you do--can't wait to see your next layout!
xoxo, Becca

Yes great question!I also think some pp are harder to use then other pp...For example:pp with a busy design all over, like balloons or something. So maybe you can start with a more "relax"design, that maybe makes it easier?

I would say pick out some pictures that mean something to you. Not alot, maybe like, 5 so it isn't overwhelming.
From those pic one or two of your favorites.
Think about what you want to say about it.
Think about what colors you want to use.
If you have a really hard time deciding where to put things, look at some of your favorite pages in a magazine. Mark the layouts you like and then see what they have in common. Are most of the pictures on the left side? Is there patterned paper under the picture? Is the journaling handwritten or typed? And then mimic the things you like on your page.
I normally put my photo on the page and just go for it, start adding things :)

oh ann....we have soooo much in common!
you don't know how many sheets of pp i've been saving for that "perfect" project...i finally just said the heck w/ it....& have been cutting & gluing the heck out of anything that doesn't move...LOL!!
it's ONLY paper!!! go for it!!!!
& i must admit....most of my fave projects came about b/c i made "a mistake" & had to nothing to loose so just went crazy!! LOL!!

I used to save all my papers and just look at them!...but its not like one piece costs a fortune and it is only paper...as the gorgeous Gigi said!
If you keep that paper too long it will come to a point where you go off it!....rip one of the "patterns" out and stick it overlapping a photo....staple it...journal around it....go on try it!

You could totally use that white cardstock and stamp it up with your acrylic stamps and create your own pp. You could stamp an image up one side and layer the photos/embellies up that or through the middle. You can customize the image and color that way to coordinate with your photos.

Glad to learn that other people buy paper and elements and then just let them sit and be looked at now and then. I also have over 100 years of photos to choose from--not kidding. I have my parents' and my grandparents' and my husband's family's photos plus my own zillion, or maybe more since digital came along. It's just so hard to know where to start. And I can't make myself "harm" the pretty things I've purchased! I also must admit that I've even started collecting digital scrapbooking items, but haven't learned how to use PSE! It's a sickness! I pledge to stay tuned and hopefully become inspired.

OK, and I have one - if you're not married, not kids, no pets, what kind of things do you scrap about? I just love taking pics!! And this 6X12 size sounds really interesting?

I JUST got married. No babies. No pets. Before that (and now) I scrap alot about my friends and about myself, what I'm thinking right now, preserving who I am at this age. Sometimes I do pagew with no pictures, just words and things I'm thinking. I did one album with a page about each one of my girlfriends
And Court does the 6x12 insanely well!

I can't stay away from the patterned papers...love 'em all! I put so many on a page my mom says, "Is that how people scrapbook now? All mixed up and crazy?" Gotta love a mother's honesty, right?!
So, where to start? My best advice would be to do something small if you are overwhelmed with it all. Like make a few cards using just plain cardstock and one or two patterned paper. Same thing with the stamps. Make a card or a tag or just stamp the title of your layout.
The key I think is to DO SOMETHING...and then you will start to feel comfortable and confident...and most likely you will begin to see what you like and what you don't like. Or suddenly find yourself obsessed with patterned paper...like ME!
Have FUN is the most important thing with scrapbooking...because our time is so valuable these days. We shouldn't be forcing creativity...although sometimes when you're 'stuck' just making yourself do something helps to inspire you once again.
Basically, I'm no Dr. Phil because I don't give straight answers. =) But, I hope that helps someone...or at least jumpstarts you. And of course...upload your stuff! We want to see what you're doing with the ideas here, okay?? Ready, get set, go and have fun! =)

the 6x12 size is really a great size to start using lots of PP with cause it's very mellow you don't feel overwhelmed with tons of space to fill. check out my gallery I have a lot of 6x12 layouts in there. They are in my 29 in 29 album :)
