The program I started in is Adobe Photoshop Elements. I was intimidated by it at first but at the urging of my daughter (thank you, Heather) I took a couple of online classes and once I learned the basics I was hooked!!

There are many different programs out there. Here's what Designer Digitals has to say:
There are several good packages out there that will do what you need to do. Being a graphic designer, I use Adobe Photoshop, but Adobe Photoshop Elements is an excellent choice. Other programs of note are Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft Digital Image Suite and others.
Just so you know there are a ton of free downloads out there. There are also so many tutorial around. Check out some of these places:

free Downloads: http://www.shabbyprincess.com/default.asp http://www.designerdigitals.com/ddgallery/sho wgall ery.php?cat=531 http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/digitalKi ts.as p]Two Peas
These are just a few of the endless possibilities.

Good information above. I use Photoshop CS to do my pages. The best way to start is with a few free kits and just play around. Digi is really no different from paper. You just have less mess and your files may be huge!!
With digital, make sure you get them printed. I have to say, this is one thing I have not done. But, I am working on it.

Digital is fun!!! That is how I started..... I would have to say I love the no mess part! The real deal is intimidating. I just did my first actual paper one the other day! The sites mentioned above are great and so is www.deviantart.com You can find free brushes to load into Photoshop if you have it! Let me know if you need any help!

Hi There!! I started digi when our house was being renovated and I had no room to spread out my paper & stuff. I am using photoshop elements 4 ( but am hoping to upgrade soon as i have the spare cashola). I did a couple of online courses - I found renee pearsons courses at big picture scrapbooking (whoops hope I don't get yelled at for referring to another site - but it is so much eaiser when people give you the actual details) to be fantastic and she was very very helpful as well - they were totally worth the money. These were how I started, her doing it digi and her brushworks courses really took the mystery out of doing many actions and functions you see in digi pages. ANd all the free tutorials are fabulous as well. I am a fan of designer digitals products (they give you a freebie element each week which is ace), and there are heaps of great digi scrappers out there who have blogs, jessica sprague has free tutorials on her blog and kirsty wiseman has the most fabulous free downloads. Anyway, hope that helps. I am not the best digi scrapper but I enjoy mucking around with things and playing with my photos. Don't hesitate to pm me if you wanted any specific link info. Cheers, Lee :)

I scrap digi/paper/hybrid all the time. Digi scrapping is addictove - that is your first warning! Secondly, it is advised you join a digi forum - they are great when it comes to getting started. I use CS2 and I have to say it pips. I taught one girl in Ireland to digi scrap in 5 minutes flat and the pages she makes are outstanding (far better than my own!). If you want, why not download a free trial of photoshop from adobe and then email me. I can chat with you on messenger and "talk" you through it.

i love digi too - i also love paper, and hybrid too, but once I tried digi I was hooked! And I have the digital supplies to prove it! LOL
i also use CS2 but I started with PS Elements, which I recommend starting with.
i'm self-taught, but I learned so much from jessicasprague.com - she has a photoshop Friday tutorials that rock!
I also recommend designerdigitals for their freebies every Sunday.
Other awesome sites are MyDigitalMuse.com and DigiShopTalk.com
best of luck! cathy

I will echo what everyone else has said. It gets addicting.
I use photoshop CS but lots of folks use Photoshop Elements which is a lot cheaper and if you use a PC there are lots of programs out there to get you started.
All of the sites mentioned above are great. I created a wiki where lots of folks have been listed there favorite designers, stores, blogs, etc all focused on digi scrapper and places to go for freebies, tutorials, etc.
Take a look - www.digitalscrapwiki.com there is a great tutorial by pickleberrypop in the getting started section that will walk you through step by step with your program.
Have fun.

I'm a Photoshop Elements girl and I love it. It has an easier learning curve than Paintshop or Photoshop CS (and is cheaper) and it does pretty much all I need.

i'm totally jealous of all you cs girls. i used to get the updated versions of photoshop through work - now that i'm out of the industry and bought a new computer i have to pay for it myself - which is the reason i'm using photoshop elements. it's great but i love working in layers and can't silloette (sp?). enjoy!

Wow! Great advice SISters - I've been wanting to try digi scrapbooking, but thought it would be too expensive and difficult (I'm a wimp, I know :) ). Off to download the free trial of Photoshop Elements now!

I love digi. I started with digi and have just started venturing into hybrid - have been loving adding some texture to my pages but not loving how expensive it can be! I was looking at a package of brads and they were $5 and I couldn't help but think that you can get a full digital kit for that price.
There are benefits to both though and just like paper I would say that the best way to learn is just play! Find a program you like (I would really recomend phtoshop elements if you want something inexpensive but still has the ability to do wonderful things)
You will have so much fun!! The best part is you can scrap and be online at the same time!! hehe!
My favourite free kits are the ones by shabby princess - she is such a gem!

I thank y'all, too. I've been very interested in trying digi b'cause I love the computer - and have played around with pse, just haven't mastered the giant learning curve there.
So all these sites will be a big help and will give me something to do on a rainy day! :)
The only problem I can forsee with digi is the flatness once they're printed out... How do you guys like that part? Do you just keep digi albums or what?

You can do two things - you can print them out and the fun thing is sometimes its kinda neat printing them out and showing them to people because if you can get your shadows looking real people will be touching your pages trying to figure out if its real or not.
Other things you can do that are fun is making a shutterfly album. I just had one printed last month, I printed it as an 8x8 (my preferred size) and then you have a quality bound book with all your pages - they look really beautiful when finished.
You can also print your pages and then add some of your real supplies to them and mix the best of both worlds together.

I just started myself and I have PSE 4.0 I bought Jessica Sprague's book and so far, I'm loving it. If you go to designerdigitals.com they have a great tutorial by JS also and with that, you'll be able to complete your first digi page. I don't think I'll ever become a digital scrapper only, I like the feel of paper too much for that, but hybrid is the way to go for me!

I am in the same boat! I have CS2 and have downloaded a couple of free kits, but that is where my journey ends! I can't seem to figure out how to crop and layer elements, etc... I REALLY want to learn, but after an hour of trying and having no luck I get frustrated and give up! ANY tips or advised would be hugely appreciated. Tricia

I started digi-scrapping around 2 years ago and loving it. There are lots of site which offer free digital-scrapbooking supplies. I use photoshop CS but you can also use other photo editing softwares. It's really easy once you get the hang of it. I'm self taught. I read lots of tutorials on digi-scrapping.
I posted a freebie on my blog. Check it out.
Have fun!

Ladies!!! You so need to check out Everyday Digital Scrapbooking blog with new tutorials on weekdays. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter so you get the big free kit next week.
Also be sure to get your copy of the only magazine about hybrid scrapbooking at Scrapbook Dimensions.
I'm not sure if linking is allowed so I won't do it but just PM me if you have any trouble finding these sites.
My personal blog also has information about hybrid....just look for "hybrid" in the labels in the sidebar.
It's so fun!

LOVE digital scrapping. Because I'm in Microsoft country and that's what I use for work (ie, Word, Powerpoint, etc.) I find Digital Image Suite SUPER intutitive. They are discontinuing it though there are lots of great tutorials out there and quite frankly, if you're in the same boat (familiar with word, powerpoint, those kinds of programs) it is super intuitive and easy to figure out so I've never had to stress it.
I also have CS3 and there are tons of things you can do in it that I just don't have the patience to learn. My fiance swears by it. I see him do something and then I just go and figure out how to achieve a similar effect in Digital Image Suite (smile).
In any event, TONS and TONS of freebies out there for digi scrapping with and I LOVE how you can play around with stuff (that word art not the right color? Adjust the saturation and tones to match your layout--don't like it? hit undo).
Welcome to the fun, extended family side!
