I need help!
I'm trying to get some paint on a playing card (I'm trying to start a deck of daily cards). The card is coated (couldn't find any without a coating). Now I've sanded it first and then I've painted/ primed it with gesso. But I have the feeling that this isn't the right technique. The card is curled now..:(
any suggestions?

i usually just lightly sand mine & paint away...

it usually doesn't curl that much...maybe just bends a tiny bit

maybe it just needs to dry a bit? sometimes when it has a heavy coat of paint it tends to curl?

I don't sand mine at all actually.

I just start with a very light coat and let that dry. I make sure that my strokes slighly overlap as well, and sometimes in a crosshatch pattern... once that is dry then I go crazy...

What kind of paint are you using?

Yep, Gi is right, this is the same thing I've done and it usually works out.

If you keep having the problem, try to base coat it with spray paint...works like charm!

i heard once a suggestion of not using water with your paint. hmmmm hope you resolve this and let us see your cards once you have completed some!!

I have used mine with gesso and not. they will flaten back out once they dry. I have noticed that they curl more without the gesso but flaten back out once they dry. hope that helps.
ps i don't sand.

I never sand mine. I just put wome gesso on than with a babywipe, let it dry for a few minutes and than paint them.

natasja -- why the babywipe between the gesso and the paint?

i don't sand either. gesso and paint and go. they curl a little but they flatten out once they dry.

I don't sand or prime mine at all! Just paint light layers and when it's dry, I paint another layer on top if I want the colors to be more vibrant.

I've just found out that there is a big difference between different brands of acrylic paint and how they behave:
This happend at my first attempt:
Paint 1
Then I've tried a different paint:
Paint 2
So, now I'm waiting till it's dry.
:-)

I've done a light-white gesso coating, I use a bristle brush that leaves a bit of texture that I like. I let these dry a long time, then I "press" them under a pile of books to flatten and then add acrylic paint. I've found the less water I use the better.
