So I have perusing blogs and websites and notice really cool backdrops for photo sessions- brick walls, old churches, wooden fences, etc...

When you set up a photo shoot- do you drive to different locations during the session? Do you have backdrops set up in your backyard? How many different locations do you go to and how do you find them?

THANKS!

kylissa,
I just use my naturally artistic eye for finding locations near me. I try to look for the nooks and cranies that people don't typically see.
A current session that is up on our blog is a great example of this.
Ulmer Studios

Just look for unique settings that FIT your style & the clients.

I use NO backdrops... Just the surroundings in the location I choose. I will sometimes travel between locations for one session... not just stick to one. If it's a family though, I try to keep the locations near by so it's not too much hassle for the kids.

Also, I drive around a lot and take notes for future session... experiment shoot...

i'm the same. i use no backdrops. i let the client choose their own location sometimes with my suggestions and i do like amber and keep my eye out for new locations. i personally don't like portraits with backdrops or studio portraits. that's just me though.

seek out friends with amazing houses you can use.
cause then you have a bathroom indoors and outdoors
If i know the clients house is nice and has good light
i always recommend we start there and then maybe
go to a few locations!
people feel really themselves in their home!

I don't consider myself a professional by any means, but the shots I do take, I go to fun places. Fitting for the person and their personality! I make suggestions to people. I have a few shoots coming up that should be rather fun because they are such fun people!

I love the old Downtown area here in town. There are so many cool things that you can do...

Unlike the PPs, I do use a few "backdrop like" things. But these are mainly 2 yards of fabric. like this...

Maureen,

How do you hang your backdrops?

Ya, when we do our first newborn session in the next week or so, we will use some fabric to hang on the wall behind the newborn... maybe... but something cute and vintage... like maureen's photo!

I've been known to just through some pretty fabric on a low hanging tree branch. good light cause you are outside yet you get a control pretty background!

those are great for backdrops maureen. i think i'm just too lazy to deal with it all. lol! :) i find that children tire so easily during a session that the traveling to another location isn't worth it for me. now teenagers are different.

When I was doing this, I did the same, found places in different areas and we did on location sessions. But, there are also great little hidden places like the 'Gardens' area. They have an entrance charge and additional for pro photogs. I only did that when the client was looking for something specific or wanted it in that specific location. Of course all charges are reimbursed and part of the fee in that case.

Some places don't want you on their property. And others don't mind. there are a few mansions that I had gone too, charged a small fee and was able to use their grounds. So, there are a lot options. You just have to hunt.

Make sure you have business cards or other documents stating your legit. We use to shoot at the city hall which is a beautiful location, but with the increase in security, they'll stop you and question. So it's good to have something on person. This may not happen to you. But, it's good to have your stuff on you.

I've worked as an assistant photographer and my daughter used to model (taking a break due to braces!). For # of locations, it's nice to keep it under three so you have a variety but don't waste the whole day driving around (especially with gas prices nowadays!). I would look around at places that are close to where you are first- just in my neighborhood is an alley with an amazing brick wall, an overgrown playground, and an old barn. Once we were doing a bride pic and across the street was a beautiful house so we just knocked on their door (ditto about carrying your business cards around- it made into a good lead and we sent them a copy of the pic). You can get a variety by just doing a simple change in hairstyle or adding a jacket or hat. It's fun to do the unexpected like wearing a fancy dress while running through a sprinkler or something! Backdrops are great but a natural backdrop is my favorite.
