We just recently decided on the 40D instead of the 5D for several reasons...
Price being one.

We were ready for the 5D because of our business but decided that we would make that leap later.

Jen, what are you reasons for upgrading? Just out growing your camera? Wanting more megapixels? More features? Business?

Just wanna help!

I love the 40D it is much faster

captures 6.5 frames per second
where the 5D does like 3.5fps

the 5D doesn't have a crop ratio like
the 40D does. The crop ratio is 1:6 on the
40D and 5D has a full frame sensor. so that
is something to think about...

I chose the 40D because of the price. Then in a little while
I will get the 5D and use the 40D as a back up camera.

okay- not to switch topics but it still fits and because BOTH of my "photography idols" are posting- which camera do you recommend for a virgin slr user? i have a point and shoot and want to upgrade to my first slr...which one do you recommend? canon rebel? nikon d40? i heart canon but heard great things about nikon... (i am also in the process of reading "understanding exposure")

I first got a canon rebel xt.
It was a wonderful first time dslr for me.
I can only speak from my experience.

something important w/any dslr is having a fast and great lens. the canon 50mm 1.8 is amazing. cheap... $80 and fast.
We can have a separate lens discussion and there might already be on the photog board somewhere if you want to search for it.

hope that helps kylissa... and ur a sweetie...

and yes... read read read over and over that book!

wow! this thread really did get hijacked!!! LOL!
reasons for upgrading? Just out growing your camera? Wanting more megapixels? More features? Business?
yep...all of the above!! :)
and i am really wanting to do some research NOW! b/c like i said this is an investment that will be made in the future.
i am also sure that Canon will come out with new models after the first of the year, esp with with all of the hype that the Nikon 300D has been getting!
but ya, business is definitely a consideration as well. there is a market here for more candid, casual type photography...and as always, you start with your family and friends!! :)
thx Court and Amber for your comments and opinions. i will keep my eyes open.
well...i am headed for the beeeeeach! catch ya'll later!!!

Okay, I am going to take the flip side of the 40D, 5D debate, I side with the 5D and here is why:

One, a new version is rumored to be coming out in the fall, when that happens that will drop the price in stock of remaining 5D's and there will be some fantastic used ones that will come up on the market. Although it will still cost more then the 40D, it will be in a more comfortable price range.

Secondly, the color on the 5D SOTC is just fantastic, and skin tones turn out with less artifacting. Not to mention the full frame, yummy goodness. You get more bang for your lens buck, and the shots I get with my prime lens on a crop camera do not compare to the full frame. Not to mention the high resolution pictures are just clearer, less grain.

But as always, what is more important then the camera is the photographer.

As for a beginner, I would definitely pick up a rebel xti, grab a 50mm 1.8 and you have a good starter kit.

i just upgraded to the 5D recently. i wanted to wait for the new version, but i couldn't wait :) plus my local store had a 2 year, no interest special. so i took the plunge and i'm SO glad i did! i love my 5D. i had no idea how much i would love it. now, my 20D is my backup and that's working out great too. not as much lense changing during a shoot. i also bought the 24-105 L lense and adore it! i still love my 50mm1.4, but the L is amazing! good luck with your decision!

oh and i have to agree with the points court and amber make. they know their stuff!

I myself am thinking of getting into photos a little more...just for us. I'm thinking of getting a Rebel but I'm afraid it may be overkill for our little family of three and my little daily self portraits. What's a girl to do?! LOL!

no, not overkill. the rebel is an awesome camera. i used mine for seven years before outgrowing it. then once i started doing work for other people i really needed a full frame so i went with the 5D.

Thanks for the advice here! I've been wondering differences in the 40D and 5D myself. Considering the jump in the hopefully not so distant future.

double ditto!!!
that little momma is a great starter camera!!!!!
you can shoot the lights out in the basic modes...and you will LOVE the results!
then when you get more comfortable...start playing around!

peace out! ;)

i just got my first slr over thanksgiving and i wish someone had told me not to get the nikon D40. the main thing i wanted to do with it (besides have a cool camera strap) was to take photos and blur the background.

well the cool lens i got (50mm 1.8) works awesome except it is MANUAL FOCUS. URGH. the nikon D40X on the other hand would have made the lens auto focus.

live and learn i guess. i was just going for the cheap route without thinking too much into it because it was just a starter that i would more than likely just point and shoot.

hope this helps a little kylissa!

I currently have the Rebel Xti, and I LOVE it!! I am a professional photog and I still use this camera. I will be getting the 5D in a couple short months, and I CAN'T WAIT! Most of the pro photogs that I follow use the 5D, and they have said nothing but amazing things about it! I go to the store all the time just to hold it! LOL!!!!! Can't wait!

I was a Nikon girl, but turned to Canon, and do not have any regrets. ;)
