How do I cut my subject out of the pic?

I usually use the Extract thingy...in Filters..you just draw around the edges of what you want to keep then fill it in with the paint bucket, then hit Ok. Otherwise you could use the lasso tool to select your subject then go Select >invert then hit Delete!( i find the lasso tool a bit fiddly ,tho )

I have done extractions only a handful of times but what I do is to zoom in on the image and use the ERASE tool. I start with a large hard brush size to erase most of the background then go back with smaller soft brush to really get in the crevices. It's a primitive method for sure. And erasing around hair gets really tricky....
Melanie's way sounds good too. Gotta try that.
{Note to digi F-gals: This would be good tutorial topic for the future}

I wanna know too! I can't extract to save my life! :)
I will try these tips for sure!
I do as Cathy does when I have tried it...I just zoom in close and erase!

Being "old skool" I am not proficient with the extraction tool...go figure - it should/does make it easier. Use your Lasso Tool, zoom in and go slowly - very slow - around your subject letting Adobe drop little anchor points as you go. Continue all the way around to make the "Selection", Feather 1 pixel (you may have to adjust depending on your selection technique), Inverse & Delete...go back and touch up any spots you need....this is how I do mine....
I have one layout
