There are some really good tutorial sites out there but here are a few good tips.
if you are using a template (i would start with templates in the beginning just to get the gist of ps, it's really a learning process)
open your psd or tiff file template. This is important because usually there is a jpeg of the template as well. The jpeg will not be a layered template, but the tiff or psd template will be.
ok, now find a kit. Freebies for kits and templates can be found at ikeagoddess.. or digifree..just follow links. You can also purchase at various shops. But for starters you can start there and see if you like it.
ok you have your psd or tiff template open. in pscs3.
the bottom layer in your layers pallate will be the background paper. You need to pick a background paper from your kit. Now that you have the paper you want for the background picked open that in pscs3.
It should open. Now on the left hand side of ps you should see a tool bar that has ps in blue at the top. just below that you will see an arrow and something that looks like a plus sign. click on that.
Next click on your paper again. hold down cntrl + a (this selects the paper) hold down cntrl + c (this cuts the paper) ***do not hold down the + sign
Next click on the template again hold down the cntrl + v (this pastes the paper into your template.
Ok it may look like you have pasted it above all the layers don't worry.
on your right hand side at the bottom you will see a layers, channels and paths pallet.. If the layers pallet is not open click on layers.
your paper will be a new layer you need to click on it and drag it right above the background layer. Next hold down the cntrl and alt buttons drag your mouse to the middle of the two layers until you see an icon appear and click. you have just pasted your background layer.
do the same for the following layers. When you get to your photo layers you can move the photo around until you are happy with how it's cropped. You can also layer over frames.
elements if on the template you can drag and delete those and add your own.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm not always here as i work, but i will check in.
This should get you started though..
Good luck and enjoy! Ohhh and a good guide book is the pscs2 bible i don't know if there is a cs3 bible or not but the cs2 one really helped me a lot.

ohhh one more thing shadowing..how could i forget shadows..they sorta make the page after all.
I use flergs here is her site with the tutorial http://flergsblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/tutorial-dr op-shadows.html
you can also buy shadows or create your own. I think her's are fabulous and really don't like to waste to much time making custom shadows unless there is a reason like 3d pages using boxes etc.

Good luck. I've been using CS2 for about 3 years and I still don't know it all...it's a very difficult program, especially if you haven't been schooled somehow. You'll pick it up though, it will just probably take a while.

i was just closing out myself and thought hmm i should mention this.
when you open your template duplicate it before working on it. You can do this by clicking image-duplicate on the top tool bar. now a duplicate will be opened up with the file name and copy after it.
Now close out the original, a pop up will appear and ask you if you want to save changes..click no..even when you close out the original papers elements etc..always click no. This is important because you could drastically alter items if you click yes. If you alter papers etc always duplicate the original before working on them.
Just read the above posters thoughts, and yes the program can be difficult. I went from photo impact to pscs2 and had utmost difficulty. It was soooo confusing. I'm glad though that there were people who offered there help when i asked questions and got me on my way. Honestly, i am able to do more in this program than i could ever have done in photo impact.
Good luck again and be sure to post your creation.

maggiebean - great tips :) I love using layered templates.
I have been using CS2 for about 2 years now and have Jessica Sprague's tutorials very helpful. She also teaches some online classes.
And now that we have four digi/hybrid fashionistas on board (myself included) I'm hoping we can address your questions :))) We will be having weekly tutorials soon so be sure to check them out!

I also highly recommend the Jessica Sprague online class "Up and Running". I just finished it. Since you 'want to know it all now' - after 4 weeks of her class, I feel really comfortable w/PS3. And the price was reasonable. Sign up for the email and there will be a coupon at some point. I'm just a satisfied customer. Oh and there are lots and lots of freebies. Good luck.
