If you had to choose between purchasing the PSE 6.0 or getting the CS2 for free- what would you choose? (I know this is a silly question- let me explain) I downloaded PSE 6.0 trial and today is my last day. I have had tons of fun experimenting with DIGI and want to continue. If I decide to buy the program, I pay $79.99. BUT I can get CS2 for free and didn't know if it is just as good as PSE 6.0. (Not to mention very much different from what I have already learned about PSE 6.0)

Any advice would be fabulous!

Hm, wish I knew more about those programs...I have PSP9 and PSE4
so I'm not familiar with the options you're considering.

Do you mean PSE 6.0 or Photoshop CS2.

Photoshop CS2 retails for about $600+ dollars, has many more features than PSE and can have a bit more of a learning curve than PSE since it is the product used by professionals for print, website design, etc.

To me free is always better.

Thanks! It is Photoshop CS2 but since I am just now learning- do you think I will be overwhelmed? It is similar to the other programs- the layering, how to move the layers? That is what got me when I first started.

Any other thoughts?

PSE is soooo much easier than CS2, jmo.
If you have been using PSE, I say stick with that.
I love free but for the headache of learning all over again, I would pay the money. (spoken like the girl who has CS3 and is still struggling after a year! lol)

CS2 is very hard to learn, CS3 is much easier but as spazz said still a struggle - so stick with PSE, it is well worth the money.

I love the CS2, but then again I have been using the programs for years and years. Don't expect to learn them overnight. The do however make a CS2 for Dummies that is awesome! Highly recommend it if you do choose that route.

New here, and been learning digital scrapbooking since September 2007. I have PSE5 and really like it but know that you can do a lot more with CS2. My advice would be get them both - is that possible? Learn all you can on PSE6 and then you can move up to CS2 and do more when you're ready. There are a lot of free tutorials for both programs on the web and YouTube. Have fun.

I would definitely go for CS2. Yes, the learning curve is bigger, but the cool things you can do (paths, actions, etc.) way make up for it! Since money isn't an issue, go for the big gun!

Also, you don't have to upgrade the day your trial ends. Why not try out the free 30 day trial of CS3 (which will be slightly different from CS2) and see if you like the extra features. Or, you could take the free CS2 and do the same thing. You can always buy the full version of PSE later!

hey- the new video tutorial is up and it's PSE6 so maybe it will help answer the questions you had the other night! But please ignore the twitching. I was trying really hard not to talk with my hands and instead I'm doing this weird twitchy thing

I think PSE is better if you are just starting out :)

I am in kinda the same boat. I already have photoshop 7 and just did my first layout with it. Now, I have been dabbling with it for photo editing for a few months - but can't do much with it. I struggled with it for several days trying to do my layout. However, I knew nothing about digi scrapping until I watched KA's tutorial last week. Lots of what I struggled with was in today's tutprial, which was awesome. However, it seems that PSE is way easier. I could do most of the stuff after fiddling with it, but it took me ages to figure out how to resize something, becuase I didn't have the resizing border. So Idon't know if it is a matter of PSE defaulting to that stuff or me needing to set up my version of PS 7 better, lol.

when you choose the move tool in photoshop, look at the top tool bar. It should say "show transform controls"

click on that and it should give you the same resizing box around your element that you saw in the tutorial :)

Thanks! Does it always show up if I click it once? Or will I have to turn it on every time I move something?

you know, mine is touchy. Once I turn it on it normally stays on but every now and then I'll accidentally turn it off. There must be some keyboard command that I'm accidentally hitting to do that or something! But it should stay on for you :)

This is good news! This means it may still be on next time I try a digi page. However, my computer tends to open windows and navigate to web pages on it's own, so I won't get too hopeful...

lol, nope. I changed what I was going to do based on feedback from y'all for this one :) But check out the digital scrapbooking link, the most recent tutorial is on the clone tool, and the one before was on brushes.

That's what I was going to say. If you have a chance to get CS2 for free, don't pass it up but get elements so you can learn all the basics. If you don't want the free one, I'll take it!! :) :) :)

I was kinda in the same boat a couple of years ago...I got PS CS2 for free and have never looked back! I love it and use it almost every day.

ETA: I was relative digi newbie when I got it and learned on my own and through various tutorials etc. I never really used PSE so I can't compare the two.

Have fun!

I use Paint Shop Pro (which does pretty much everything Photoshop does for MUCH less $) & Adobe PhotoShop CS2...I do have CS3 but haven't really used it much. Early on I had fooled with PS Elements but felt too confined and quickly outgrew it - keep in mind that was MANY version ago...I think the last version I has was v.3 and so I am sure much has changed. :)

You can also get an open source image editing program for FREE which is a really great program, it is called GIMP...you can find info and the program here: www.gimp.org
