I am determined to have my first DIGI scrapbook layout. I downloaded PSE 6.0 for free and I only have 5 days left. I have read 2 different tutorials on how to put a page together. I DON'T GET IT!!! I have my paper saved on my computer along with elements and photos. I opened a new page- set all of my sizes, and such. While on the "move tool", I open a paper page (it goes next to layer) and then I click and drag it up to fit my page. I then open a picture and do the same thing. I finally figured out that you have to "ARRANGE LAYERS" and that is all well and good- but I keep losing them. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I added a picture. I then added paper. I arranged layers so my picture was on top. Then I tried to add a title and I lost them both. WHAT DO I DO?
I know that it may be too difficult to explain but I have tried the recommended tutorials on the DIGI message board and I need help.
HELP PLEASE!!

Are you hitting the Garbage Can instead of the New Layer button & as a result your layers are being deleted?
If your layers ARE NOT in the stack then they are being deleted somehow.
Let us know.

if you don't flatten your layers, it saves as a .psd file - which doesn't show up as a thumbnail sometimes. So you want to go to LAYERS> FLATTEN IMAGE when you are finished and then save-.
If your layers are being deleted while you are still working on the page, however, I am not sure why!!
I'll be going over layers in more depth in the next tutorial but I'm hoping we can help you before next wednesday! lol!

Am I supposed to create a new layer everytime I add a paper, embellishment or picture? I just keep opening and dragging- then trying to move things front and back.
Thanks!
P.S.- I have no idea where the garbage can is so I don't think that is what I am doing. Of course- who knows at this point?? :)

Yes, you need a new layer for each piece you bring in ....that is if you want to be able to move them all around individually. :)
I am not 100% about PS Elements, but in PS CS2 there is a little garbage can in te lower right corner of the layer palette and next to the New Layer icon. ;)

Hey Kylissa -
That "green check" isn't for saving, it's for confirming something that you've just done, like, say resizing a photo. You can't do anything else in the program until you click the green check to confirm that you want to make the change you just made....
BUT - as far as layers go. I hope I can explain this correctly. When you first begin a layout, you generally start a "new" project. You can determine the size, etc. and, generally, you'll then get a white "background" paper. If you're working right on that bg paper, you'll see it - and all the layers associated with it - on your screen and in the layers palette. AND, you'll also see it down at the bottom in the "bin".
NOW - (I sound SO authoritative, don't I?) here's the thing. Let's say you open up a piece of patterned paper and a photo. What you want to do is click on the patterned paper so that it's in the "big" screen. Then, with your move tool, drag that paper down onto the white background paper you started with (down in the "bin" at the bottom). Okay - NOW click on that background paper (down in the "bin") and on the right you'll see 2 layers - the bg AND the patterned paper.
OKAY - next you want to click on your photo - which should be down in the "bin" at the bottom. Go ahead and with the move tool, drag that photo down on top of your background paper that is now covered with the patterned paper. Now click on the "original" bg/pp/photo (all in one down in the "bin" at the bottom). NOW you should see those three layers all on the right in the layers palette. If you want to move your photo around, click on the photo layer over in that layers palette. If you want to make your pp smaller, click on the pp layer over in the layers palette.
I think, possibly, what you've been doing is clicking on the patterened paper that you opened up and have tried to use that as a background, but it doesn't quite work that way...
I hope this hasn't totally confused you. Try printing out the text in this post and go step by step.
Please let me know, pm me or whatever, how you make out, okay? :)

I am off to work this morning but will come home and tackle DIGI again. I think you are right pascrapgal- I think I am confusing my "new layout" with background and then pp and so forth. I thought I was supposed to hit the transparent key when adding things- should I do white? Also- am I dragging things to the bin to layer or to the actually "big screen that is in front of me". I am confused with the main screen, the bin, and then on the side with the layers. Why so many options?
I will be on again tonight to start playing around. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!

I am back on and still messing around with this DIGI stuff- so far I have my PP on my background and a photo on top of that. When I try to add text, embellishments, etc- they disappear under the background paper. HELP!

I am not sure that I get your problem. But is the text layer under the pattern layer? If so just activate and drag the text layer so that it is on top of the background layer. If you have two layers a background and a pattern layer make sure that when you are making a new layer that you have the top layer active, that automatically will make the layer on top/visible. It sounds like that the text layer is just placed under the layers. Hope this helps or just ask again and I will see if I can help. Sorry if my writing is a bit "jumpy". Are you using a Mac or PC?

Here is my second attempt at DIGI. I think I figured out the layers after watching an online tutorial. I still can't figure out why the embellishments have the white around them. Do I need to "lasso" or "cut out" the embellishement? If so, I tried and I can't figure out that part.
Anyhoo- here is my 2nd DIGI.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR HELPING.

kylissa... There are easier programs to use for scrapbooking... drag and drop ...resizing easier....layering simplified... try the free trial of fotofusion at www.lumapix.com I'm not affiliated with fotofusion...I've just used it for 3 years and still trying to figure out the free PSE5 that came with my wacom! Hey I looked at your layout and it looks great! What white space around your embellishments? I didn't see it...

I pm'd you as well with something that might help.
Layers can be challenging and unfortunately I use Photoshop CS3 so they are different from what I can tell via the webisodes.
As for your question about the embellishments - usually they are done on a transparent background so that you can just drag it on top and you are done with it.
Good luck

the first lo i did (christmas one) had the white space. i think the free digi stuff i downloaded did not place it's embellishments on transparent background. since then i have been fine with embellishments because they are all on transparent background.
i am slowly learning and i am loving digi- i spend way too much time on the computer so it only makes sense to work with digi scrapbooking.
thanks everyone!

Kylissa, I was just as confused about the whole thing as you when I started trying to do digi. I decided to take Jessica Sprague's "Up and Running" digi course, which she does over 4 weeks, sending links each day to various steps in a layout. You watch her video tutorial, which you can pause as needed and then resume. You can go back and do each lesson over and over if you want, and you have access to the lessons forever in case you forget something. Plus, you get lots of freebies and discounts for shopping on digi websites. This was awesome for me. Now I feel pretty confident about building a layout. So check out Jessica's lessons if you find you are not gaining confidence as fast as you would like.
