i know you'll be gentle with me!

Ya know when you download a digi kit and then you extract the folders from it? What do you then do with the folder from which you extracted? I've been saving them, but it seems like I'm just wasting my space because I don't ever come back to them once the other stuff is out and filed.

What do you do?
Thanks SIS/MISers! :)

I myself have been saving the zip files as well but really I don't know why I do it. If you really like the kit or you purchased the kit, I recommend taking the zip files and backing them up onto an external harddrive or CD just like you would with any digital file you never want to lose (photos). That way if anything does happen to your machine you can get to them again.

Then delete the zip file from your machine since it is now all backed up.

I agree with Tallynt...I use an external hard drive for anything (photos or digi kits) that I want to make sure are safe.

Usually I burn cds with all my digi kits as sooner as i purchase them,so my computer doesn't get overloaded with unecessary stuff.
And if you keep it organized in cds is much easier, and you don't take the chance to loose them as well;D
Try it.

The zip files are a compressed version of the files. It takes up less space and makes it easier to attach to an email or upload.

I usually back up the zip files on CDs after I have extracted the files.

I always delete the zip folder and move my extracted contents to my "digi" folder. I'm super OCD about my desktop though..hahah.

I'm getting an external 2 gig usb drive so I can take them off my hard-drive just in case my computer crashes! I thought about burning them on CD, but (1) i've got wayyyy too many. and (2) i often download more collections from the same designer / website, and I dont like the thought of not having all the collections in one place - to find easily.

See... OCD :D

I save my zips in a safe place so if the extracted files ever get corrupted or deleted or I have a HDD crash (which I have had many) I have the original files. :)

Wow, thanks everyone. I think I'll just back em up to an external drive. I'm constantly adding to my digi collection (just like my paper one, go figure!) and with an ext. drive I can just keep adding them on instead of burning a new cd each time...

GREAT advice everyone! :)

Anything I should know about choosing an external hard drive? Sounds like I really should get one.

When I buy a kit, I take it apart, I keep only the things I know I'm gonna use like the particular paper that attracted me and the elements the rest I delete.
Then I save the zip file to a dvd by designers..

That works the best for me. I must have space for my own designs so I can't hoard too much..

I always delete the zip file...not sure this is the smart thing to do but after digi scrapping for over 2 years I have not had a reason to go back and use a zip file that has already been extracted.

I also save my zip files on a different harddrive. That way, you always have a backup in case you lose the other files. Its better and quicker to unzip than to redownload and run the risk of not being able to find some of the items you had originally.

Maggie - that is SUCH a great idea! My problem is that I have the "what if" mentality. But I'm starting to get SO much stuff I think I'm going to go through and do just that... ;)

I used to have that "what if" mentality too, but then I set myself a deadline...if I haven't used something within 4 months, I trash it

of course you could always split your stuff into two sets -- one collection of items you know you'll use or love, and the other containing those "what if" items that you can't bear to get rid of but probably will never use. Then you can take that "what if" folder and burn to a CD(s) or put it on your EHD, which frees up space on your computer
