i do this thing with my hands, like when i'm writing something and i can't come up with the word, i make the "writing" gesture in the air until i think of what i wanted to write.
.....and just now i was looking for my scissors and i realized i was totally doing the "scissors" motion with my fingers as i scanned my (really messy) studio.
so i'm sure i do this b/c i'm scatterbrained and it's like a subconcious method of not forgetting what i'm doing but i'm wondering if anyone else has ever noticed they do this to?

I haven't done that specifically, but I have "written" math problems in the air with my finger so that I can visualize them.

LOL well it made me giggle.....I don't do the gestures by myself usually but when I talk I am quite the gesturer/fidgety type person....I also talk to myself quite a bit...and answer myself...haha
We all have our own quirks :)

I do it too.... Also, when I am thinking, I pull on a strand of hair constantly. Only on the left side. What is that all about?!?

I do all of this!! talk to myself, make the motions, twirl my hair....

I always have to be doing *something* with my hands. Doodling, playing with a paperclip, a stress ball - just have to be doing something.
I had a listening coach tell me it's because I'm a kinesthetic learner, and doing something with my hands let's me focus or listen or whatever. And it's true - if my hands aren't busy, I'll fall asleep in a meeting in no time.
So maybe that's what it is for you too! and ya aren't weird... just the hand motions trigger your memory or something. =)

I don't do that, but my hubby pointed out to me last week that I ALWAYS leave my pinky up- whether eating, drinking, or even typing....I guess I'm a girly-girl. :)

i totally thought i was the only one.
i do it all the time like if im driving and i see a sign i will write it on my leg with my finger or on the passenger seat. when im in church i will write what the priest is saying or what the choir is singing. i even do it when im in school-i told this to my brother and he told me i was weird and that maybe i should try actually writing when im in class and take notes-which makes sense. i always thought it was just a tic.

I don't think I do that. I do the math problems in the air thing though. You're not any more weird than the rest of us weirdos.

Wanna hear something really freaky? I actually don't write in the air, my thing is, I type words I'm hearing in my head. I never told anyone that I did it and then, a couple of months ago, my 14 year old son told that he does it too! Actually types in his head!

I still count on my fingers (like in elementary) and I do the thing on my hands when you multiply a number by 9 (like 9x6 ... put your sixth finger down and your fingers show 54.)
I'm really bad at math.

umm...i still dont know all of my 7, 8 and 9 times table. *hangs head in shame* so that sounds pretty good to me

anyone else count steps? like when you're going up and down the stairs? i find myself counting them, without even trying to do it.

i always count stairs.
or just steps in general.
or pretty much anything else that you can count.
the clock ticks, the texture bumps on my wall.
anything.
and always when i'm doing other things.
i don't just sit and count random objects.

hmm, never really thought of it before. I do walk into rooms all the time though and can't remember why I have entered the room.
I need to take notes though in meetings in order to pay attention. People always think I am this amazing person because I take these detailed notes but if I don't, I can't pay attention and would totally get in trouble at work or piss someone off at PTA. So I am a note taker.

it's a sign of creative genius...
don't worry about it.
i've noticed that people who are hyper-creative are a little bit touched, in an individual, unique, "gathering my creative thoughts any way i can sort of way"
more often than not, these people are very successful.
i first noticed this when i was in culinary school, especially during my internship with rocco dispirito...he was crazy in the kitchen, but total genius (sidebar: cannot explain WHY he is on DWTS...ugh)
when you have a creative gift, it is often manifested in ways that seem strange to others, but perfectly normal to those like us...
just roll with it...
