My daughter really, really, really wants her ears pierced. She knows it will hurt and all, but is still game. She's almost 7. So we're going to go for it.

Is there anything I need warning about? Like, when she cut her own hair, everyone I know who had a girl said "yes every girl cuts her own hair" ?!?! Is there something I don't know that I should expect with pierced ears? Girls are so different than boys!

I would say just make sure she keeps her hands away from her ears as much as possible. Trust me infections hurt (Personal experiance :) ) Also I would have them pierce both ears at once. That way its over faster and she doesnt have to think about it as much.

Hope that helps some:)

in my family (and i think culturally in general) girls get their ears pierced as babies so i dont remember when i got mine and i dont have kids.
but, my cousin pierced my nieces ears 'late' and keeping her from twirling her studs in her ears was a huge deal. she was 2 and she thought it was so fun and i guess you dont want her to play with them in case of an infection. other than that dont use cheap studs and the first time you take them out clean the piercing because she may have a bit of blood-my niece did-but she didn't complain of any pain.
hth.

I got my ears pierced at the age of 7 or 8...I didn't have any problems...where ever you get her ears pierced they should let you everything that needs to be done....I remember that I had to turn my earrings once a day to keep them from something?

I had my daughter's ears pierced at 3 years--didn't cry or complain.

It's not really that painful--I did my own (you know, when it was fashionable to have a zillion holes in your ears) and I don't recall it hurting all that much.

Just swab on Hydrogen Peroxide 2x a day with a q-tip, and every few days, take the studs out and clean them with HP as well. The HP will bubble and foam, but it doesn't sting like alcohol would.

Id buy some good earrings tho. NO cheap-ies my Niece is sensitive to nickle and we didnt know till she had her ears done. I mean after the healing time when she can finally put in earrings she wants.

1) Go for hypo-allergenic studs.
2) If possible, go to a real body piercer who will do it with precision and give proper aftercare advice. This will be a trained professional... rather than a retail clerk at Claire's.
3) Use antibacterial soap or spray with Bactine 2x a day & rotate.
4) Encourage her to wear her hair pulled back for the first week, because getting hair caught on a new piercing is super painful!
5) Don't let her change earrings for about 2 weeks, because doing so will promote irritation, infection, and delay the healing process.

I've got a little experience with this, being married to an ex body piercer and all ;)

I never thought about having her wear her hair back. Good call.

both at once. haha. or she might just have one ear done!
hydrogen peroxide. turn them, but not too often. quality.

You are all so helpful! Okay, so I was planning on just going to Claire's - I mean I figure they do it all the time right? but maybe a real body piercer would be better. Like at a tattoo place? Do they do little girl ears? That seems so tame compared to their usual business!

You are all so darn helpful! She's so excited, I hope she actually goes through with it. The things we girls do for beauty :)

It's definitely not typical to see parents bringing their children into piercing parlors, and I would absolutely call around first. If they give any hesitation whatsoever - just move on. Personally, I've never known a piercer that would turn away a mother looking to get her daughters' ears pierced properly (you'll probably walk away with several compliments)... but it's always best to call and make an appointment anyway.

Professional piercer = precision & care
Claire's = quick, cheap & often heals crooked

That being said, lol, I had my 2nd set of ear piercings done at Claires when I was 12 and they turned out fine. I've just seen & heard a lot of horror stories since then so I'd be careful. It really all boils down to the person behind the gun. If you do go with a place like Claires, just make sure the person is calm and focused, and make sure they mark her ears with a pen first so they're symmetric. Good luck!

my grandma took me to get my ears pierced without my parents permission when i was 6 years old. can you imagine? well, i messed with them and they became infected so i had to take them out. so, like everyone else said, just make sure she doesn't mess with them; and help her keep her hands really clean. because, you know, she WILL mess with them! :) hope that helps.

We had a no crying rule in our house, so if you wanted your ears pierced there could be no tears or you would only have one.
I had mine done when I was 18.
And it hurt.

My sister had hers done when she was 8 (she's the tough one in the family) and she didn't cry but she did flinch and they aren't even to this day.
So be sure to tell her to be very very still.

**blink blink** ... girl I love getting tattoo's but I would get my ears peirced over that anyday LOL ... quick and painless .. just a SIMPLE pinch ..

..I cannot wait to see pics of her lil ears..my mom use to take a broom and break off the lil sticks burn the ends, dab them in alchohol and then make me wear them in between, so my holes would not close.
