I forgot to list this before but....give up your dryer!! Before you roll your eyes and stop reading....think about it. I do laundry for six and it is TOTALLY do-able (if you have clothesline/drying rack space).
I know this is huge for a lot of people and many would never consider it but you can start out small. Initially I started hanging half of my wash...basically I would wash two loads, dry one and hang the rest. I have clotheslines outside and in my basement.
My dryer broke last summer and I decided to wait to replace it until summer was over. But I never did replace it. I have not used a dryer in over a year and I really do not miss it at all. I've saved $400 in not buying a new one and countless dollars in heat/electricity.
I have a drying rack for undies, socks and small stuff. My three oldest kids rotate being laundry helper. I do one load a day. The kids hang the little stuff (the part I dislike) and I hang the big stuff. You do have to keep up with it though b/c you can't do a ton in one day to catch up. This is kind of nice because it's become routine and I usually don't have huge piles (except after camping or flu!!!!).
I have found that my stuff DOES NOT shrink, things last longer and things don't fade as much. I live in a very dry climate so it's also nice to add a little humidity to the air when things dry inside. And I have no issues with stiff undies...our clothes are surprisingly soft right off the line.
Biggest of all...it's good for the environment. Give it a try...even if you just hang one load a week you will be saving!!

What a great way to do it! We hang all of my clothes but we dry all of my husband's work clothes and things. I think we could get a grip and not let things pile up so much. Then, we would have more room to hang things.

I am not sure that I shared this but we changed out all of our light bulbs to the compact fluorescent and put in a programmable thermometer. Those things really help.

Free Conference calls are fun! You can schedule a conference with any group of people you want to talk with and then everyone will get a phone number to call into. If you have unlimited long distance on your phone, then the conference call is free. You can get a free account here: http://www.freeconference.com/Home.aspx
Now, doesn't that trump IMs and things like that? What about a family phone call with family that is spread all over the states? Of course, it also works for business meetings, too! ;)

Teaching kids about the value of money is so important!! Look at the mess our country is in because people/businesses/government are all spending what they don't have.
I've been frustrated with our school system because they let the kids buy lunch without lunch money - they just put it on their account. While having lunch accounts that you can put money into online sure is convenient, I feel like my kids are missing out on real experience counting money, getting the right change back, etc.
My husband, level headed and wise as he is, helped me to adjust my rather annoyed thinking. So now, we're teaching them about credit. That's what it's all about these days anyway. Online accounts, credit cards, it's mostly virtual money anyway. I didn't learn about credit cards until I was 18, but my kids are learning how to use them responsibly starting in kindergarten. Now I feel old...!

This weekend I was shopping with one of my kids at Target & Party City. When we got home I realized that she didn't throw any fits when I said "let's add that to your birthday list" or "I'm not going to buy that today." I thought wow, she's actually learning to consciously make decisions on what to buy. We talked about it over a $0.99 banana split at Sonic and she beamed when I told her I was proud of her. I guess teaching about money isn't so bad after all :)
(half price drinks from 2-4 at Sonic is our budget friendly treat)
Good thread girls!

i do lots of the stuff you-all already posted. i really love hanging my clothes outside, there's nothing like the smell of line-dried sheets to go to sleep on:)
one other thing i have started, and will expand next summer, is to plant my yard. i have planted flowers, mostly perennials, but this year added tomato plants, dill, oregano, and peppers. i'm really intrigued with the idea of edible landscaping. i loved going outside this summer and picking a tomato to have for supper! i know some places have restrictions that might keep you from doing this, but if you can get away with it, no mowing!!
thanks for all the great ideas!!
