I sat up and watched it last night and while spectacular I have to say the telecast (not the actual performances) were a bit let down in some sections - I don't think the the broadcasters were quite on the game with their editing and shots, especially the drummers section - they kept cutting into super close ups and not doing full stadium shots so some of the effect was lost I think. It seemed to get better later though by the time the tai chi people were up.
And that said, you have to wonder why there can be such gigantic amounts of $$$ put into something that isn't really a necessary part of the olympics (really - while nice to see "pretty things" the games really are all about the athletes - like hilly said, the athletes parade is the best bit) when there are lots of parts of the country in abject poverty - how much would it have cost to costume and set that whole show up?????? And the money that goes into the stadiums for the Olympics which is never recouped from futher events! It is insane - I had the same problem with the amount of money sucked up in the Sydney olympics when we had hospitals crying out for refurbishments and roads that were in dire need of upgrades to prevent accidents.....
I love the idea of the Olympics and the spirit of competition and striving for personal bests and the sports, but the commercialisim and dollar chasing makes me sick really.
sorry rant over...LOL!

I can't wait for the Olympics to start tonight. I watched the USA women's soccer game the other night. We lost but I am still looking forward to the other many events! I haven't been around here in awhile. I get so inspired by looking at everyone's designs and creations. Way to go girls! =)

I just got done watching it, my nieces watched it with me and it was fun to see it through their eyes. It reminds you what the Olympics is really about.
I'm not to crazy about the government of China, but they did put on a good show. And I'm with you lalalee a few times I had to bit my tongue about the money spent and some other things.
And the little 9 year old boy at the end, too cute!

It was phenomenal! It was incredible, magical, wonderful, perfect. And as a former athlete for me the parade is boring and too long. I just think if they do the parade then the games should start on sunday not today. Because most of the athletes can't go due their competitions on the next morning. Just my 2 cents.
Now China has one of the richest histories to tell in the world and I love anything cultural so for me the whole thing was delightfull! I watch all the olympics openings for many years and this one will be in my memory forever. And on the end felt like the whole Beijing was blinking...fantastic,fantastic!

I'm watching the swimming heats right now!
I stayed up until 2am last night because I wanted to see how they were going to light the cauldron - very impressive! Although I wonder if the guy who lit it had his eyebrows burnt off...? He was SO close to the flames!!
I totally disagree with China being allowed to host the games due to their human rights record and their presence in Tibet, but I mean, that's not the athletes fault, so I hope everyone still watches / supports even if they disagree with China politically.
I love watching the non-mainstream sports that you would never watch at any other time, like the gymnastics, the diving, the weightlifting, etc. Good fun to watch and always interesting!

I totally agree with Aussiejess and Lalalee, completely. I'm wondering how the thousands/millions of migrant workers will overcome the industrial closings in lieu of the games. And don't get me started about Tibet.
BUT, that being said, I'm still a Olympic Spirit junkie. For just a few hours last night, I was in my perfect little world where we all joined together with joy, optimism, and excitement. A couple of tears welled up. And I had sweet dreams.
The giant LED screen was cool, the costumes were amazing, but what really gave me goosebumps were the "human" props. The drums, the cubes, and the precision circle formations of the tai chi group. I was in awe. And my favorite fireworks were the giant footsteps walking through the cityscape to the Bird's Nest, genious. Now I want to research the director that created this fantasy. When the drums were opening up last night, I started thinking what a cool patterned paper the image would make. Looked like houndstooth, lol. Searching for a pic now.
And lastly.......GO DARA, GO DARA, GO DARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
