If I tried to put this book on the shelves at my middle school I would run into a lot of road blocks, however we do have gay/lesbian students that I feel would really benefit from this book.

Maybe you could keep this on a shelf behind your desk, kinda like where they keep the nudie mags at the gas station!!!

That is too funny!!

Actually we do have a parental permission slip that kids can get signed for books such as this.

i havn't read the book that was in question, but i can't undestand how banning a book dealing with homosexuality can benefit anyone.

So true!! The problem is that before I was transferred to the middle school I worked in the elementary building. A few teachers objected to some material that was on the shelves and removed them!!! The media specialist that was there did NOT fight for any of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So when I walked in last year I was determined to get some of those books back on the shelves...where they belong!!! In order to do this we've implemented a program where the student must get a permission slip signed by their parents. I always print out a review of the book in question and give the parents the opportunity to see what their child wants to read. I do NOT believe in censorship whatsoever but in informed parent/child relationship.

I requested that book when I was in the 6th grade from my local library and the librarian called my mom to make sure I was ALLOWED to read it!! Can you believe that 20+ years later some high school libraries still won't put it on the shelf?

Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History

I learned that I can continued to be overwhelmed by the events of the Holocaust!

This book is so moving and I could actually hear the voices of these characters in my head as I was reading it. Very profound. I've never read a book written in this fashion and I must say that I loved his drawings and comic book style. Very easy to read and very engaging. I truly think this book could be used in a high school setting and that it would draw in even the most reluctant reader.

I want to thank Mellymel for pointing me in the direction of this book. If I hadn't seen it in her list of to-reads I may have missed this heartrending book!!!

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi

I have much to learn about Iran and thanks to Marjane Satrapi I have a little more insight into the history of her country. Again I must thank Mellymel because this book was also listed in her to-read list. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about Iran and the people who live there!! Excellent story!

My friend and I spent our whole 5th grade year trying to secure a copy of WIFEY by Judy Blume...we looked every week after choir practice (nice eh) at the public library...it was in the card catalog but never on the shelf.

All that wasted time and I don't think I ever did read it.

I think the big one to hide was called Princess Daisy -- haha totally laughing when I looked it up on Amazon...yep that's gotta be it b/c it was published in 1984. Someone had a copy and I had to totally hide it from my mom!!

I honestly don't think I could be bothered with it.
Or Princess Daisy.
Been there, done that.
90% of the thrill was that it was forbidden trash.
Now, what's the point?

Update: 46/120

Well, I started Memory Keepers Daughter, but after my doctors appt saturday I decided I couldn't do it right now. DS runs in my family, and I had the blood test done Saturday and found out I was having a girl, and that kinda through me over the emotional edge for reading the book. Not that I would have a problem with having a child with Downs, but reading what happened during the beginning of the book with this just doesn't sit right for me!

So, anyway, I ended up reading James Patterson The Beach House. This might be in my top 10 of his. I really enjoyed it. Started it yesterday and didn't go to bed till it was done.
xoxo

The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill

and I'm quite fascinated by it. It 's historical fiction and follows the life of a girl abducted by the slave trade from Africa when she is eleven and follows her through her struggles to return home.

OMG!

I am reading a book by Phillipa Gregory called "Respectable Trade"
it is about people being taken from Africa for slavery in America. So far it is beyond horrendous! I cannot believe what happened to people in Africa on their journey to being a slave in America. It is so far beyond evil!

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I liked this book and I am going to read the 2nd one soon....but.....she did rip off a LOT of other ideas from some high profile authors. Overall it was a fun read but not a series that I'm overly attached to like Harry Potter or Twilight.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Oh I've been wanting to read this! I doubt there will ever be to many series that I am attached to like HP or Twilight!

14/20
Finished Betrayed by PC Cast and have moved on to Chosen. I'm liking this series except for the fact that I think she repeats herself to much but it is a YA book.

Going to try to finish reading all of the ones I borrowed from mom before I get shipped back off to Michigan in two weeks. At least they are fast reads!!!

OK, clearly I am not an avid reader anymore. Seriously? Some of you are going to read 50 books byt the end of the year? If I read 5 I'll be in good shape. OK, so Melly can you put me on this list? I'm going to read 10 books by the end of the year. I'm going to start by finishing "Mornings on Horseback" which is a biography of Teddy Roosevelt that I started reading when we got back from our Yellowstone vacation. It's fantastic and I can't believe I put it down for so long...it's the dang TV I got all into "House" episodes. How do I fight my urge to lay in my bed and veg out with my laptop? Tips? And reading during the day isn't even an option for me.

OK, I'm excited! Someone has to kick me in the butt and make sure I do this, OK??

JJ

JJ,
You should DVR your programs and then you won't have to waste your time in-between commercials. But if you can't DVR then read during the commercials!!! LOL!!

Glad that you've joined us....

Update: 32/40

I am almost finished with Breaking Dawn as well, but I've slowed down considerably. I think I don't want them to be over . . .

Thanks to all who have recommended this series. It was definitely a fun one.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

I'm so glad that I was strong-armed to read this book!!! I love how unique Stargirl was and her genuine sweetness. Lots of people are thrown off by a NICE person and don't know how to handle it. Leo is like so many kids out there. They want to belong to the group and have everyone like them....no matter what. As soon as school starts on Tuesday I'm grabbing up Love, Stargirl so that I can see how this story ends.

i checked out the ragamuffin gospel from the library on many recommendations.
and i just couldn't get into it. at all. i just returned it without finishing it.

i did finish the subtle knife by phillip pullman. loved it. i liked it a lot better than the golden compass.

Turn off the TV JJ!!
Give up a reality show or two for a good book:)

I don't have time to read during the day either UNLESS I give up a class at the gym and read while I bike, stair climb or ellipticalize.
