Ok I am looking into selling off a bunch of old scrap supplies on Etsy and would really prefer to do shipping labels from home. How do I go about setting all this up?
I see USPS has scales you can buy and you can print labels....is that what I do? For some reason I thought they would issue you a scale if you wanted? Was I dreaming that? hahaha....
Any help on how to go about this the best way would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I do. I love printing at home. I bought a scale. They are pretty cheap and in the long run, they will pay for themselves. I print through Paypal. Delivery confirmation is free when sending Priority. Priority supplies are free, the USPS will even bring them to your door. You can order them through the USPS.com site. You can fit a lot into the flat rate boxes. I have pached in 20 pounds of stuff before.
I used to be a Power seller on Ebay before I moved to Etsy. If you have any more questions, I would be more than happy to help.
I also live with my mailman...:)

Was I dreaming that? hahaha....

Yep, you were dreaming!

I used www.USPS.com for shipping my eBay items, and it is very simple. You actually save $$ by printing at home, $.05 and up on the cost of postage. The only shipping labels I have been able to print though are Priority Mail. This cost more but your customer will get their item faster. Plus you can always charge them the cost of shipping. All you need to do to set it up is create an account online...pretty simple!

I don't know of the cost of the USPS scale but I know Wal-Mart has a 3 lbs scale that is only $20.

Hope some of this is helpful. Good luck!!

I also print my labels from home. If you go to the post office you can buy the scale for about $15-set up an account on USPS site-will need a credit card on file. Use the Print shipping label tab and follow the prompts. It will ask you the size & weight of your package, if you would like to insure it and at the end it will bring you to a page on how you would like to ship it. You also get free delivery confirmation if you go through the website. Most of their shipping supplies priority mail boxes, priority mail tape are free when you order through the website too. www.usps.com

i've been wanting to do this because my post office is ALWAYS so packed and even when it isn't they're slower than molasses!
my question is about the labels you get to print on. are they just from staples or other office supply store or are you printing the labels on paper and taping them down?? *totally confused over here*

I just use paper and tape it to the package. I'm sure there is a label out there you could buy, but I'm too cheap. :)

been poking around on the USPS site
found a link for labels
i'm with you Heather, I don't want to have to spend money on them if I don't have to. has anyone shipped using a label printed on paper and taped down?

also frustrated because i know about several of their "mailing partners" but don't want to pay a monthly fee. my shipping is erratic and it just doesn't make sense to spend money on a service i don't use for months at a time. going thru the post office site i can only do priority mail and a lot of times what i'll be shipping is catalogs which qualify for the bound printed matter rate, MUCH cheaper. to use that rate i'd have to do one of the other mailing vendors. anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks so much all for all the opinions and such!
Well I have sent stuff out with taped down labels since when u have to send things back to certain companies they do this for you (for example sending in daughters DS today to get repaired and they emailed me a label to tape on box)

i use paypal because you can ship first class and it has free delivery confirmation, on USPS it has to be priority and that's way more expensive,

and i just bought a small food scale from walmart for like $10, but i'm only shipping ATCs, and they're lightweight

and i just print the labels on regular paper and tape them down, the instructions say not to tape over the bar code but i do sometimes anyway.......
