bugs live?
I'm really hoping less than 24 hours.
Because last night I'm reading my latest "Real Simple" in bed with the only light on in the house and I turned a page and this GI-NORmous bug flew out of the page and, of course, I let out a screech which, of course, woke up my sleeping husband who, instead of saying the expected, "what's wrong?" said, "what are you doing?" to which I answered, "I'm screaming because this giant horrific bug flew out of my magazine!" DUH!
So, I just assumed it flew away forEVER, but, being that I was reading with the only light on in the house, it only stands to reason that the thing would eventually return, which it did - like right to my general neck and face area which then made me not only scream, but jump out of bed. That REALLY woke up my husband this time. So then we turned on the overhead light and it flew into the fabric I have draped on my canopy - but only long enough to let us know it was still alive. After that we looked and looked, but couldn't find the thing...
And I just could NOT get back in my bed and read!
I mean, the thing was grotesque and it had WINGS!!! Ew!
So I took my magazine and went all the way down to the basement/TV room where no flying bug has dared to go and slept (and when I say "slept" I really mean "laid there trying to sleep") until I got up this a.m.
So, how long can I expect that thing to live? My back is killing me from the couch. I want my bed. I want to read in my bed. But I don't want the freaky bug thing to haunt me again. Yeah, well, I MUST have slept a little last night because now I remember the dream I had about - yep, you guessed it - attacking BUGS!
I'm tired.

Brake cleaner kills bugs in an instant. But I wouldn't recommend dousing your canopy in brake cleaner.
That's freaking creepy though. I hope it's gone tonight so you can sleep!

I think it's a few of days too, but I'm not 100% sure about that. That would give me nightmares too. Maybe it will find its way out of the house today.

Ugh, Jan! Something similar happened to me a week or two ago. One of those horrific wood roaches (2 inches long, with wings) somehow got into the house, I think the screen in the LR wasn't sealed off properly. Anyway, my son said he saw something huge but couldn't catch it, so he went to bed. Fortunately, later dh found and killed it. Yergh! Shudder!
I would comb my bedroom until I found that sucker, if I were you. I don't want to give you the willies, but what if it reproduces before it dies!!!!

Not long in my house. I have the bug man spray at least every three or four months. So when the bugs get in here they DIE, year. I live in the country, and bugs are everywhere. Tonight I just took photos of my Rose of Sharon tree which the Japanese beetles are eating up, and there were some king size flying beetles with them. It is horrible, but I wont spray with Sevin because it is so poisonous and hazardous to the enviornment and to birds. So what to do, maybe they will go away soon too.

i will not be helpful .. alas.. its in my nature to warn you..
beware of bugs.
i was recently bit by a spider (2nd time in 2 years)
suffice to say.. it looked like someone took a bat and smacked me in my bum (cause it bit me on my heiny).
and then the bruising. and discoloration..
it was all so ugly. not fun
and well.. once upon a time i used to say "oh leave the little spiders be, they eat all the other bugs" but now i am of the mind that all bugs must be destroyed when they enter my home.

thats aweful. Im not too terrified of bugs. I'd want to know what kid of bug it is, then you could get a better idea of how long it would live, what it eats and so on.

I have no idea but I am seriously majorly terrified of bugs. BIG TIME. In fact while we were at CHA I had to have 2 people kill these weird looking big bugs that were near me. EWWWWWWWWW

um, HELLO! Sorry, to all you bug-rights activists!
Yes, we get exterminated regularly, too, but still - this was IN the magazine!
But - guess what???
I found the bug!! Yesterday morning when I got out of the shower, there it was, conveniently located right next to my husbands sandals, which I can't complain this time that he left on the floor. I moved one of 'em over enough to SQUISH that thing (crunch, crunch - sorry, ew, I know) and then I went to pick it up with a wad of tp and - it was STILL moving! So I scrunched it again and grabbed it with the tp, but, seriously, those creepy legs were still moving. I WAS going to keep it to show everyone else (because, of course, they all thought I was nuts by now) but I was just afraid that if it was still moving, it could come alive again before I had a chance to show them and then I'd be back to sleeping downstairs again...
So, I flushed it down the toilet.
And, now, I can sleep peacefully in my bed again.... But I'm leaving a big ol' light on in the kitchen so the flying critters will fly to that and NOT upstairs to my reading light - JUST in case one that's NOT in a magazine gets in the house!
End of story. Thank you all for your sympathy... Except for Sasha, who just laughed. :P
