Are they fun?
Are they a waste of time?
Do you meet cool people?
Do you get in heated discussions?
Are they worth it?
Where are good places to look for where to join?

xo,
aw

What if we started one online? Like on the MB?
I've always wanted to join one too, but no one here (in my small town) has one.
So, I am just alone! lol

I was in one for about a year and a half. It started out really fun and interesting but kind of petered out. We didn't have a great system for picking books, and sometimes the book was boring or people complained or just decided not to read it. After a while, it started to feel like school or something, and I wanted to get back to reading for pure enjoyment.

Totally depends....on the group.

I've been in four.

I'm in one now that is called a "book club" but there is ZERO/NONE/ZILCH/NO discussion or talk of the book at all. It is a social gathering where the book is NEVER mentioned AT ALL. Which is fine if you want to be at a social gathering...but not fine if you want to be in a book club.

I was in two that were so/so but a lot of people didn't attempt to read and/or finish the book so the discussion was always the same three people, me being one of them. But both of these were groups with lots of good friends...so it was still fun.

And then I was in the most awesome book club ever...great choices...everyone read...everyone talked...great food, great women, inspiring, brain tingling, fun, great discussions, hated for the night to end...but I had to move away and I truly miss it. Really miss it.

So there you have it...as far as looking to join one...I was invited to join the ones I was in by friends. Three of them were established and one was a new, just starting one by a friend of a friend. I know libraries often have them...but those have always seemed kinda scholarly to me...not sure though.

i'm starting an online one on my blog www.litchickcafe.com

and you're all invited!!

i'm setting up the list now, and taking requests!! :)

i'm in a bookclub irl, and it's no fun when everyone likes the book - the good discussions usually come from the tension of some liking & some not.
it's even possible to change your mind about a book after a discussion plus you learn a lot about other people (and yourself) by participating in a book group.

:)

sorry, one more thought.... i agree it can be difficult to continue to read "assigned" reading without it feeling like school

that's why i started the online one - you can join the discussion or not
you can read the book, or not...
but it isn't totally like floating out their alone...i respond to all the comments and people ask questions through comments, of each other

one day I hope to have message board, but for now it's just through the comments on the blog. hope this helps

wow mellymel.
that sounds really neat.
i've always wanted to be in a book club,
but the library ones have always kind of intimidated me.

off to check it out!

I do love my book club. We have 12 members. Each month one member chooses a book and provides her home with refreshments. Sometimes they go with the theme of the book, but sometimes that can be challenging! For example, when we read, The Runaway Jury we ate on china. When we read, Devil in the White City it took place during the Chicago World's Fair, we ate carnival food. I like it because sometimes it gets me to read a book I might not have otherwise chosen:) Some people don't finish, and that's ok. Sometimes I don't like the book and by the time we're finished discussing, I have changed my mind and vice versa. I am liking MellyMel's idea of the on-line book club A LOT!
