so i worked today (and tomorrow and wednesday and and and) and it was dead. and after 5:30pm we had no customers. so my fellow sales associate and i were sweeping and mopping and straightening and stuff. we estimated when we would be done and i called my dad and said to pick me up around 6:15.
my car is being sassy and not in a good way. the brakes are going and my dad has told me NOT to drive on the highway. AND we were going to have christmas tonight after i was done with work. (no one could switch earlier so we were pushing it until i was done with work anyhow.)
this is the first time i have ever wanted/needed to leave at all early and the first time i have ever gotten a ride - i've always driven myself.
so my manager was very close to finishing counting the drawers and we had tidied everything up by the time my dad showed up. i knocked on the door to the office and said, "my dad is here, is it okay if i go and cari lets me out?"
and there was a pause.
she said, "well i'm almost done counting but i still haven't done a walkthrough. when did you call your dad?"
...
i said, "well, i called him not long ago and told him to come pick me up. if there is anything big wrong with the store i can fix it tomorrow morning because i open."
she said that she'd only be about five more minutes and that she GUESSED it would be okay.
............
it's the 23rd, she has scheduled me to work tomorrow (she doesn't have to work a full day for christ's sake) from 9-4 and she's upset that i'm leaving probably FIVE MINUTES EARLY because my DAD IS PICKING ME UP???
i now feel incredibly guilty. i already emailed cari and told her i felt bad for ditching her and leaving her to suffer the walkthrough on her own with our manager.
FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE. here is some slack, manager. cut it for us.

Oh, I feel your pain. When I was in my first year out of college, working my first "real" job, my boss was an el cheapo. We didn't get paid holidays, so if we decided to take Christmas Eve day off, it was at our own expense. Anyhow, me, the other new girl, and one our darkroom guy were the only ones that showed up, except for the boss. (This was a small map-making company, btw)
My friend Jane (the other new girl) and I were at our desks working, and the darkroom guy had come out of the darkroom to chat with us. We were in a good mood -- it was Christmas Eve for pete's sake. Anyhow, our boss comes out of his office and requests that I please follow him. He goes back into the office, shuts the door, and proceeds to tell me that my talking will NOT be tolerated. That I should be working, not socializing. Blah blah blah.
Okay then, Scrooge. I go back out to my desk and anticipate the other 2 getting called in, as well. Nope. Just me. I was so fricken upset, I left. Scrooge finally came out of his office and asked where I was. A$$hole. Merry Fricken Christmas.
Elly, tell your manager that Leslie said to remove the stick from her @$$ and lighten up a bit.

i do. i've been really trying hard to see it from her perspective because it makes things better, but really there isn't an excuse for her behavior aside from just being pathetic. so. :/

i completly understand. the manager from the job i just quit was completly like that. and it was just a complete power trip- trying to prove that he was in charge. and that ended up being part of the reason i quit. and i told him about it. and i hope that it made him realize what an a** he was being about stupid stuff. but i doubt it.

"Power" probably does have a lot to do with it....... I am sure that your boss was fully aware that it had been a quiet day and that you and your other staff had beein doing a lot of tidying. PLUS - You did offer to fix what ever needed to be fixed in the morning... I have found (unfortunately) that there are a lot of people like this that will not be able to change their ways too easily........ They just need to have the last word so that it is their decision that is noticed (Unless their decision is wrong in which case they will blame you or anyone else they can.....)
Have you talked to Cari today??? How was it after you left???? Does Cari feel under pressure by this boss of yours???? Sometimes having a friend at a workplace makes things more "bearable" I have been at the same place for 13 years. I deal with a lot of "power" issues. Sometimes its just a little annoying and sometimes it gets to the point where I am ready to quit. At the end I realize it's only a job and the only way to get through it is to just deal with the little daily crap. I have a fellow employee who feels the same as I do......... We know have both been there too long and know the drill....... When we see the Power Tantrum starting we just roll our eyes and do our job and wait till it blows over.........
Elly, I hope you are having a good day today with happy customers and none with attitudes.... Hope your boss found absolutely nothing out of place on her walk through last night and that she will lighten up a little for the rest of the year....... Hope your car gets better and I'm glad that you have your Dad to help you get around safely........
Merry Christmas!!!

One day you'll be some super successful{stamp maker or celebrity scrapper or mom or...} person and she'll still be there. And you'll look back on this and smile and think,"Man I'm glad I'm not doing THAT anymore!"
Hope you have a better day today.
