Texasgirl's thread had me thinking about bad bosses and I was wondering who has a bad boss story.

Once when I was 17 (important point) I had a boss who would come into the office and tell me how much he would like to see me in a french maid outfit. He would make all kinds of innuendos (sp?). The Clarence Thomas trials were going on at the time and he use to joke about how he was a bad as Clarence Thomas. At least that lady was of legal age!!!!

What is your bad boss story???

I have a bad one. I could actually link to a webpage that is FULL of complaints about this person, but it is kind of unprofessional, so I won't. Let's just say my boss (principal) was crazy. Crazy like screaming "SHUT UP" over the loud speaker at the entire school and having letters of compliant fingerprinted to find out who was against her. CRAZY.

Yikes! PERV alert!

I have had lots of bad bosses. lol
I had one, who was a preacher's wife, and I was working at a Christian daycare center at the time. I had been there for 3 years, and she was taking over as the director. Well, she came in and we had a meeting after work one night. This was our first time meeting her.

Her first words to us were...

"My name is blah blah, and I will be your new director. Now I want us all to work in harmony. Feel free to tell me your wishes, wants and concerns, but know that I will do what I want to do. This isn't a democracy here, this will be run as a dictatorship."

All of our jaws dropped. We were like, did she really just say that?
She made a horrible first impression, and ended up losing about half of her staff because of it.

oh man.

i could totally beat all of you.

when i was a sophomore in college, i practically managed a smoothie place in town. i worked there almost full time and really knew how to run the place. well, they needed someone who could actually manage the place since i was at school so they hired this guy, eric. well, i was working one day, and i got a phone call saying that one of my friends (18 years old) had just died completely unexpectedly.

as you can imagine, i was devastated and couldn't stop crying. neither the manager nor the owner would come in to relieve me that day. i had to work the full day.

BUT the real kicker is, i came in there a couple days later with my sisters and was laughing with them and the new manager said that i had to go to the staff meeting saturday morning. i stated to him that i would not be there because i had a FUNERAL to attend. well, it blew up from there with him telling me i could not miss the staff meeting and basically said that how could i go in there laughing and smiling if i was so devastated about this loss.

yea. i quit. after 2 years there. and 2 years later the place went to hell and the owner shut it down because the staff was so horrible they killed the place.

Oh my gosh. wow! That is bad!
I've had lots of bad bosses too. Nothing in particular really stands out...I'll have to think about it. hmmmmmm
well my first boss was my best friends dad. he tried real hard to keep his cool in front of me. but usually at some point he'd get really mad and scream at employees (including me) in front of customers and tell us all how stupid we were.

oh gosh..totally just got out of a bad job
.
i used to work at a christian book store. so, pretty much everyone, including my manager were christian. not a big deal.
the thing that did always make me mad was that our manager would get on his pedestal about how this was a christian store and we needed to set ourselves apart from and above other stores.

but, when my grandfather was in the hopital, dying, he would get really ticked when my mom would call me to tell me how he was doing. and the day before he passed away, i asked if i could take a long lunch and go see him because his doctors didn't know if he would make it until 5. he let me go, but gave me a total guilt trip about it and acted like he couldn't believe that i would ask that. and the real kicker- he made me work the day of his funeral. like i could even function that day- but he still made me come in. and the funeral was an hour away, so he let me leave 1.5 hours before it. no time at all to spend with my family.

and, this summer, when my mil was getting married he was not going to let me go to the wedding b/c it was on a saturday. by that time i was so over it that i gave him the ultimatum- you let me go or i quit. so he let my go to the wedding, but wrote me up for an unexcused absense b/c i was part time and got no personal/sick days.

Wow. These are all stinky stories; not like this is a thread with a positive theme!

I had a boss who was a little on the skeevy side. The job was easy and I was paid relatively well considering what my job was. When I was making my plans to leave for school we were at work one morning blowing up balloons for graduation, I worked at a party supply store, and my boss, who was the owner of the store asked me, when I thought I'd have my first drunken sexual encounter in college. Needless to say I stopped working there shortly after this incident.

I worked in a salon for 9 1/2 years when it was sold (even though it was supposed to be mine in 4 years). The new owner cut off our long distance so we could no longer call clients who lived out of the area, when she came into the salon she would turn the airconditioning off because she didn't want to pay the bill (I live in Nor Cal where temps reach 115 degrees in the summer), she caused scenes in front of clients, accused the employees of stealing and was a generally "unpleasant" woman.

I finally gave her my notice after trying to see if things would work for 5 months. She called the police on me when I was moving out claiming that I was stealing her property (which I was not). She called the police 5 other employees for similar reasons. Each time the police visited our establishment they found us completely innocent. She repeatedly called my cell phone making threats.

She finally got what she deserved when every single employee quit (9 total) to open a salon together and get away from her. The kicker is that in less th n 8months after purchasing the business she had no employees and had to close the salon! She is now sueing the previous owner claiming that it was all some big conspiracy. WHATEVER!

BTW, this is the extremely condensed version of events.

Wow, the boss making you work on your grandpa's funeral takes the cake.

I can't STAND my boss.

Last week he called to ask me to look up a file. So I'm looking through some files, and murmuring to myself what I'm seeing. After about 15 seconds, I hear a click. I say, "Hello?" Nobody there, so I figure we must have been disconnected. I find the file right away and call him back, and he responds with, "Hello?" And I say, "Oh hi, I just found the-" and he interrupts me with, "Look, I'm busy. I'm with someone. I'll have to call you back." So he had just hung up on me instead of simply saying, "I have to go."

I have to deal with crap like this all the time. No wonder I have work anxiety.

I had one too... I was backpacking by myself in Australia for a year in 1999 and had several jobs. They were all totally different ranging from totally perfect and fun to well uhm... a nightmare. I worked for a very nervous guy, who was scratching his face all the time, he was the owner of a very popular restaurant. It was full all the time and people were lining up everynight to wait for a spot. So he told us to serve the people quick-quick-quick. Now that is quite normal for a good running restaurant. But it also meant having to clear people's plates while they were still having their last bite. And that kinda bugged me. While i was putting away dishes and walked back outside to a table that had just put down their knives and forkes he yelled at me "F...'n hurry up"!!" and gave me a big push, which literally threw me over to their table. The people stared at me and i stared back and i totally wanted to break down in tears, but i did not want him to see that. So i finished the night (i worked there for two nights) and for the second time he had promised to pay me at the end of that. Again he didn't. I told him i wasn't going to come back anymore and that was it, never got my money for those two nights...

Oh heck i just remembered another funny one. 2001: I was working for a boss for one year when he ordered me to get the file of people that had applied for a job at the company on his team and to look for a specific resume in there. So while i was looking for it i actually found his handwritten notes that he made during my OWN job interview one year before. "Experience: good", "Education: good", "Motivation: very good", "Looks: X." On his other notes from that day he scored the other ladies on looks: excellent or good" LOL. Ok i have to be honest here: I now find it very funny, but a the time i did feel a LITTLE bit hurt...;)

How about the one who "fired" me 12 working hours before I was supposed to be gone because I quit?

I gave three weeks notice, and because he didn't like my attitude (about the fact the person who was replacing me was getting an extra staff person--a request I had been making for a year and was told couldn't happen).

So yeah, I was fired at noon on Thursday, when my last day was Friday.

What a doofus.

Love these stories!

My first job (I was probably 15) was at Baskin Robbins. The owner was a creepy dude that always stood too close, you know the type? He always wanted to adjust my apron for me. Ick! He used to sit in his car in the parking lot and spy on us and I got caught picking gumballs out of the bubble gum ice cream. He came in screaming and scared the crap out of me. That job didn't last long.

Your stories are purely horrendous !
I worked at two different Christian associations in the year of 2006. One was Ok, except once someone asked for a raise for the holidays for me.
He did it without consulting me because I was holding the account and I was veeeery careful about it, so I probably wouldn't have asked.
Well, the guy asked the raise for me unexpectedly during a meeting, and one of the women said : "well, she doesn't need the raise; my maid just puts money aside every month for her holidays, so if my maid can think of it, Helene probably can"
A) I was earning like 300$ a month for that job, and that came from a woman who had never had to work because her husband was a Dr or something, and she always wore designer clothes and such B) it was the most offensive thing I had ever heard, both for the maid, and for me.
But otherwise it was quite alright at this job

Unlike....the famous convent workshop job.
It was for an association that sold things made in convents and other Christian communities.
The people there were just plainly horrible !
They treated me like SH*T on a day to day basis ! No place here to write the details, suffice to say that I later learned the girl who held that job before me SUED them. And won ! Even the charity workers broke up in tears every day there.
And if you missed it, it was a Christian association. I've always been an agnostic, an it didn't help.*
* just a joke, I know all Christians are not like this ! My mum is a fervent believer, but unlike these people at the shop she doesn't make a fuss about it, but she actually THINKS of others !

Yikes, those are pretty bad and a little funny.

Now every time I see "wee bit" (what it think of when I see her name) I will start to think "gum ball picker"!!!

Well, really, that's the best part of that ice cream. Poor little kids are like, "mommy, where's the gumballs?" Whilst I'm smacking away... I can see now how that was not ideal job performance. HAHA

The moms should have been thanking you for saving their little dears from all the food coloring in those little suckers. Was your mouth blue for like weeks afterwards?

Oh geez, these stories are funny yet sad! I've been lucky enough to have some pretty good bosses. The bad boss, though, who comes to mind is the principal I had when I taught in a Catholic high school. He always bragged that the school was a "family," but in reality it was nothing like a family at all. He was nothing but a drunken male chauvinist pig. I spent two years of hell teaching there. The last straw came when a kid went to administration to complain about a grade I gave her. I was told that I was a terrible teacher, I didn't know what I was doing, and that I was an embarrassment to the school. That was it, I was done! No wonder this school had at least a 50% turnover rate each year!

The next year I found a job that was like heaven. The faculty at my new school truly was a family. Oh, and the best part? I was runner-up for Teacher of the Year in only my second year there! HA!
