Okay... I did a big mistake... I walked into Joanne's Fabrics and saw what Sewing machines are REALLY like NOW. *ACK!*
Omg it is SO not my grandma's sewing machines! I mean these machines are mini embroidery computers!
Also there was this 12 year old girl there who was picking out her 400 dollar sewing machine for xmas! I was like... YOU SEW!?! She is like yep - I do pillows and this and that...I was like GOOD FOR YOU!!!! *big props*
Anyways - back to my help request... what types of sewing machines do you have - Brother/White or Singer? Do you have electric ones? Do you have a "surger" I think it is called? Whatdo you use them for? Do you like them? Would you upgrade your machine if you could and if so to what? What would you use that for if you did? Do you like any of the Martha Stewart (LOVE HER! I know I am BAD! But seriously she puts her face on something.. I BUY IT! *hangs head in shame*) sewing machines?
I sometimes wonder WHY I should even THINK of getting a sewing machine...I am a widow with no kids! I have been hemming and hawing about a sewing machine for quite some time because I am like OMG - I BARELY have time to scrap - why should I get a sewing machine? Than I think ... WELL. I can use it for scrapbooking, mending, making shower curtains and drapes, make doggy clothes and other fun stuff. Also.. I guess quilting is big now too... my neice needs a new quilt... But than I think OMG is this just another FAD of mine!?!
Than I think... wait... I used to do this when I was a kid - same with scrapbooking... so it is just coming back to me because I have more time TO DO it even though I may not THINK I have the time.... Does that make sense?
So on that whole TIME note... I thought the best type of Sewing Machine would be the electronic ones... specifically the Martha Stewart ones. I am NOT getting an embroidery machine because I am like... UM no. a) WAY to expensive and b) really now... I don't need that.
THOUGHTS ANYONE!!! Please HELP ME!!! *hugs* Nan

i have a Husqvarna (said with thick Swedish accent) that i really like. i bought it a few years ago on sale at Joann's. what was nice about buying it there is that they showed me everything about it. lately all i use it for is for sewing on my pages:)
if you are only going to use it for simple things they have good, inexpensive ones at Walmart and Target. my daughter has one from there and it has been perfect for her needs. my opinion is that you don't need to go for all of the bells and whistles (martha's picture on the box!)
have fun shopping for it!

THank you ! I would love to get the one you mentioned but thems are EXPENSIVE in my opinion.... but they are brilliant machines!
Okay I found places that actually REVIEW sewing machines which made me ALL giddy inside.
I have narrowed down my choices to - Singer 7470 and 7462 ... I am finding out from my research that the cheaper ones will REALLY break on you and I am one of those people that if something breaks? I am not a happy camper...
Now I have to see if I can actually GET one. *hits head*

Nancy, I have a Husqvarna and LOVE it...it is pricey though. I did a ton of sewing before scrapbooking took over my life...clothes, window treatments, and recently I have been quilting! I love to sew. I can tell you that before I invested in my current machine, I had a Singer that I got for like $125 at Service Merchandise (remember that store from years back LOL), and Singers are totally fabulous machines, never had a problem with it and eventually my sister adopted it!
I have a Serger as well but have not used it once! My mom got it for me when a neighbor of hers was moving and selling it!
I think you'd love having a machine! Good luck with your decision, wish I could offer more help!
smiles,
