I need some advice. My son is 4 and a half years old. I found out he was allergic to milk a little before his 1st birthday. When he turned one instead of giving him regular milk we gave him soy milk. He drinks a lot of it because other than brocolli which he loves... it's his only source of calcium. To make a long story short... my mother told me tonight that soy milk is NOT good for my child so I am wondering what any of you do to get calcium in your milk allergy child.

I am allergic to milk, but I don't drink any sort of it. lol.. I am not a good example.

I can't stand calcium pills either. Ick. I can't take soy either, because I have Hypothyroid.

i'm not allergic, but lactose intolerant.. instead of soy have you thought about trying rice milk? it comes in different flavors, like vanilla(would use that in cereals etc) and strawberry, chocolate and one or two others i think. but i'm not positive that its a source of calcium. can you maybe give hime some calcium chews/supplements?

orange juice with calcium???

My son is allergic to milk but he is only 15 months old. So I am curious about this question also. I was also told soy is not a good thing for children. My pediatrician told us not to give it to our son too.

There is a milk, that is lactose free. I remember when I was working in the daycare, there was a little girl who was lactose intolerant. We would have to buy that milk each week. It was a tad more expensive, but it was all she could drink. I don't think it was made with soy either.

My son used to drink soy, but we switched him to Lactose free milk. He really likes it, and it is better for him. It tastes more like real milk and not so sweet.

my son is allergic to dairy, but its not lactose intolerence, it's an allergey to the milk protein and whey.

he drinks fortified soymilk...Silk Plus, with Omega, plain. It's in the blue carton.
Also at about 3 yrs, we started multivitamins, but be careful since a lot contain dairy in them. We also added a nondairy calcium supplement.

we aren't very strict with the vitamins, just use them when we remember.

other than that, i just try to keep everything well balanced.

I used to be a vegan... so maybe I can lend a hand... Rice dream (Vanilla enriched) is very yummy... or Orange Juice (with Vitamin D and Calcium)

Vitamin D is just as large of an issue when Calcium is also missing... they need each other to metabolize in your system.

Green Leafy veggies are high in both; any greens, broccoli, spinach... Try mixing them into berry smoothies for kids. I had a handful of Kale or spinach to my son's blueberry smoothie, along with vanilla yogurt and apple juice... he loves this!

Other foods that kids like, or that you can add to food that are high in Calcium; Backstrap Molasses (mix in oatmeal), Steal cut oats, Salmon (just don't serve too often because it's high in mercury... or buy farmed salmon instead of wild caught), Brown Sugar (use instead of regular sugar in baked goods), any dark greens (just chop and add to spaghetti sauces and stir fry), Beans; try hummus and black bean dips or add beans to soups, Nuts are also high in Calcium.

I know sometimes other dairies aren't an issue for milk allergic kids. So if you can up his yogurt/cheese/cottage cheese intake that will help.

I love Jessica Sienfield's new cook book; Deceptively Delicious. It teaches you how to hide veggies into your kids favorites.

I don't think I am much of a helper here, I am lactose intollerant and I don't drink soy either, very few at least. Here in Holland we have these drops that convert lactose. The milk will taste sweet then but I really don't like normal milk anyway.
Good luck on finding a good alternative

My nephew is allergic to milk and he drinks the lactose free stuff. He's a tall, strong 25 year old now, so I don't think it hurt him in any way. LOL

His allergy was weird though, it manifested through his behavior. He was kicked out of 2 daycares and suspended from kindergarten before the doctor figured it out. Once milk was removed from his diet it all stopped, it was amazing! We could alsways tell when he was able to sneak milk at lunch because his behavior would be so bad.

why is soy milk bad for them??? my cousin has asthema and he drank soy milk all of his childhood life because if he drank regular milk he couldn't breathe. Personally I hate soy milk but that's my own personal opinion

HERE is an article about children and Soy products.

I do give my son SOME... almost anything is fine in moderation.

I read that article and it mostly talks about soy formula in infants, unless I misread something. Which is totally possible. lol
I breastfed thru 19 mos. and so my son has only had soymilk, never formula.
he drinks a half gallon every 2-3 days. So not even 2 cups a day.

My doctor says that it is that best thing for him because he cannot have most dairy. He seems healthy and we've never had any reason to suspect that soy was bad for him. he will be four in March.

I am interesting in knowing more, though, if you have info on toddlers/preschoolers and soy. I haven't ever heard of it being bad for kids, so I am totally surprised.

Salmon (just don't serve too often because it's high in mercury... or buy farmed salmon instead of wild caught),

Actually, it's the other way around...farm-raised fish is higher in mercury because it collects more intensely in the ponds where they are stocked.

And I love almond milk over rice (too binding), don't know if there is a calcium-enriched version. HTH.

D, they are also saying the same thing for preschool children and adults. The way it was explained to me is soy has a lot more plant estrogens and interfers with natural horomones in the body. Bad for everyone but particularly bad for boys.

I bet each of us could post an opinion on anything, and find supporting evidence for our opinion. It makes me so frustrated. We can't just go to one reliable source and make sure we understand this. So, we have to decide for ourselves. My son does not tolerate milk. I don't give him soy or regular milk, he has a special formula that we will hopefully be getting him off of soon. When we figure out how to replace it. That's the thing with parenting. You don't know you made a mistake till futher down the road.

I ALWAYS get this mixed up! lol! That's why I just rarely eat any big fish anymore!

Thanks!

Isn't that the truth... it' so hard to keep track of all that we read and learn about nutrition... that's why I just try to do things in moderation... And I think you always need to go with what your doctor says... I mean they check the blood-work on your child and would let you know if something is off balance...

Why is it so hard to EAT nowadays! :)

My husband is allergic to dairy. Unfortunately, the "lactose free" milk doesn't do it for him, because it is not lactose intolerant but allergic to the proteins (or something like that.)

When he was litte, which was back before soy was even popular like it is today, he would take tums everyday like vitamins as a source of calcium! He also used to have to use powdered baby formula with water in his cereal, poor guy!!!

why have I never heard this?? lol

I swear, I made his baby food at home, with organic veggies, don't let him have juice, sugar, all the "bad stuff" and now, the one thing that he can drink, is probably bad for him. geesh.

I guess I should talk to my dr again. I mean, he will drink rice milk some, but he really doesn't like it. he also eats soy yogurt, soy snacks, etc. I obviously don't want to do anything that might harm him, but if it was so bad, why do the drs tell you to use it? just curious, ya know?

my doctor suggested this for my son as well! how funny. I thought he was nuts. lol
