hi tia,
it is a childrens celebration. There's a man (looks a lot like santa) who gives kids presents on his birthday, december 5th. He visits schools etc with his "black" helpers. They are black because they slide down chimneys to put presents in childrens shoes (instead of stockings) that they put by the fire place.
Normally after this day it's kinda allowed to put up christmasdeco but I couldn't help myself, I just HAD to do it today! ;-)

Happy PAKJESAVOND to all Dutchies!!!!

Here is a part of Sinterklaas history intresting for the American ladies ;-)))

Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. It was during the American War of Independence, that the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam) which had been swapped by the Dutch for other territories, reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past.[1] The name Santa Claus is derived from older Dutch Sinte Klaas.

Happy Sinterklaas to everyone who celebrates on December 5th...

In Hungary (which is where I was born) Santa comes on December 6th.
(We call him Mikulas)

OMG! Happy Sinterklaas!

I was in Amsterdam last year for the parades and celebration last year and it was amazing. So many kids, fun acrobats hanging from the buildings, a HUGE concert for the kids, and a parade with St. Nick. Dam Square was PACKED!

When I asked who Zwarte Piet (St. Nick's helper) was I got a totally different story. But I'm sure there are a ton of different ones out there.

What surprised me the most... They were throwing out these little cookies to the kids. Unwrapped yummy little cookies. Would that ever happen in America? No one trusts handmade goodies for any parades or Halloween or anything anymore!

Maybe I'll try to get a few of my pictures from last year's parade up on my blog today!

Happy Sinterklaas! How fun! My son and I were reading about the holiday on wikipedia yesterday! He is a little jealous I think!

btw... the humorist David Sedaris wrote a wonderful story about this tradition (and other things) called "Six to Eight black Men" that is SO FUNNY... you can read the story HERE.

I hope the story doesn't offend anyone! David Sedaris is somewhat profane and he has a "unique" sense of humor... But I am a fan!

meredith those little cookies are called : pepernoten or 1 on 1 translated peppernuts but that's not right at all! They are yummy! Then there's pretty much the same recipe to make cookies (flat bigger ones) in doll-shape called speculaas. I am stuffed with that right now, so on to the x-mas goodies ;-)
