Hello Ladies! I work as a Foster Parent Training Coordinator for the State of Ohio. In my position I arrange for a class to be presented to foster parents and adoptive parents. The state mandates that each child that comes into foster care has a life book. It is sorta like a scrapbook but is only about the child, starting with information about why they had to come into care, being taken away from their parents or caregiver. We have a State conference in September for usually about 400-500 people. One of our missions at the conference is to reinforce the responsibility and the mandate of these books being created for these children. One of the major complaints that comes from the foster parents that care for these children is that they don't have the resources or the ideas on how to make these books meaningful for these kids, the say they are not creative, they don't know how to start, they can't keep up with the process. By rule, in Ohio, each child should have one and when foster parents don't keep up it falls on the Case Worker to do this, as it has to be done.
So my question, do any of you know of manufactures that donate discontinued items, old lines of paper, adhesives, stickers, journaling pens, scissors, ablums, etc? I am going to be working with a trainer who will be teaching this concept to about 80 people and I want to try and arrange to have basic supplies and ablums for the participants of the workshop to take back and work with their families. Well this is what I pray that I can do. I know that this is not something I can take on myself, I am making some books on how to get started and the basics, from ideas I gather on the internet and such but supplies for such a large number of people is not something I can do myself.
So if you know of anyway to get resources donated I would appreciate hearing about it.
Today when we were talking about the conference in a meeting we discussed the fact that the kids who came into care and are aging out, 18 years old, not all of them will have one. We are going to have the youth that attend this conference come into the training and talk about what it means to the child that has a book and the child who doesn't have one, that thought made me want to cry and come home and scrap because I am blessed that my children will have their story created for them in a number of books, very overwhelming.
A story was given by the director that when she was brought into care she only had on her clothes and her coat. Those are the only things she has from her first 3 years of life, no pictures of her or her family. She has never seen her mom since that removal from her home and has no picture, just the coat she was wearing that day!
I pray that someone will know where I can go to try and find donations so I can offer a plan and some resources to these workers.
Any help that you can forward to me would be appreciated. dilnatmom!

I also am willing to donate to this VERY worthwhile cause. I have an adopted daughter and that's why I started scrapbooking in the first place...to provide details of her history! I have way too many supplies myself that I would love to donate. My friend and I have been talking about this for a while now trying to find someplace to donate our very lightly loved supplies that we no longer need. I'm so open to helping here!!

Have you tried contacting a LSS to set up a donation box? Here in Chelsea, MI, my LSS has a box for supply donations for the local NICU so that parents can put together some pages while they stay at the hospital while their preemies get strong (or in case of the loss of their child, they are also encouraged by counselors to work through their grief by creating pages).
I am an adoptee myself and it is the main reason I scrapbook...please PM your addy for when I go through my supplies...thanks so much for posting!

I think there are a few companies who will donate provided that you can give them a tax id number (for write off purposes)
One of our local LSS'es also sponsors a program I used to work with for children with mental impairments and disabilities so you should definitely ask at your local craft and hobby shops if they would be willing to give you some assistance too. ( i routinely give them all of my non-essential items because I know every bit helps)
Another idea too would be to have a "Chinese auction" type thing too, in an effort to raise money to help fund the program. This would help "non-scrappers" donate money and or items which could be "auctioned off" to a wider array of supporters.
Good luck with this truly worthy cause

I just typed a long message out! It is now gone!
First I was not expecting this truly personal response, I am touched beyond any words can ever say!
My address is Kristin Townsend 9040 Summit Pointe Drive, Springboro, OH 45066.
I can't wait to get to work and tell my committee members about this! What a wonderful feeling you have all given me and I can't wait to share this with the others! Please make sure to put your return address with your package so I can make sure we give you some sort of recognition in our conference package, not your addresses but I will send you all a copy of what we put in the book!
AGAIN THANKS and PM me with any questions ! LOVE MY SISters!

Many scrapbook stores have rummage sales where people bring old supplies to sell. Often the money goes to charity, instead (that's what ours did). I would contact LSS and see if they could hold a collection for you, or give people the option of donating the supplies/money that they would normally bring to a store rummage sale. I know of some stores in Southern Cal who have sales once a month, so you might be able to collect the large amount of supplies that you need in this way, if there are many stores in your area.

I have an idea and will run this through hullyhen aka Angie..we are doing a T2T (Trash to Treasure) swap every month - getting rid of our trash and sending it off to someone else with hopes they will find a treasure or something they like - anyhoo...at the end of the swap..either in June or Dec we will get our original box back..I would love to donate mine - the entire box and maybe some of the other 30 plus women would love to join in - I dont really want or need my things back...and would love to help a good cause. I think that is wonderful what you are doing!!
