hey ladies!!

need your help.
so my friend is a teacher and is working this summer with a small group of kids. as a project to go along with her lesson plan she is having the kids make 'family albums' about the book she is teaching from.

she has asked me to go to her class tomorrow and kinda show the kids different things the can do with 'scrappy' stuff for their project. they are using things like lunch bags and paper and ribbon and stamps, etc. very limited amount of supplies.

im not sure what im gonna do seeing as i am not an expert in the field so...wondering if you guys have any suggestions at all. what are some things i really want to tell them or let them know?
these are freshmen kids.
tia,

Hi Sandra - this was in my faves. it looks pretty easy and can be adapted to use with paper bags. i suggest having small pieces of pp that they can cut up or use as is.

i have an actual paper bag layout in my faves. i'll try to find it and post it here for you.

have fun!

the other Sandra

so I was going to give you this long post with an article i wrote on scrapbooking with kids and then i saw that this was for freshman kids so nevermind.

here is a paper bag album that I did using a coffee bag and some tape for the binding, edge. Totally can be done with any kind of tape.

For freshman - i would focus on the journaling to a photo.

But things you could teach them are:

- how to create an album out of a paper bag
- ripping and tearing of paper, layering for effect
- different ways to use stamps - using one color for the stamp and then outling the outside of the stamp with a different color to create like a mask - using the edge of an ink pad to create journaling lines, stamping in black ink and then coloring the stamp in
- using paint
- different ways to use ribbon - make flowers, make tabs, make grass (remember kitleen's layout)
- journaling - different prompts on how to journal would be awesome to help them jump start a family album

this is all that is coming to me right now, as freshman pretty much anything that you needed to learn or wanted to know when you first started would probably be similar

last summer i taught a group of kids how to do the paperbag scrapbooks (i make and sell these at craft shows) with their pictures from summer camp. we had a blast. with the young age, i tried to touch on the basics- picture, title, journaling, embellishments. make sure the capture the memory and date (if they can remember) and then let them go wild. they came up with really interesting pages- some great ideas that i ended up taking home to use with my paperbag scrapbooks.

if they are younger- the basics is what you will need to get into. if they have scrapped some before, i would get into the the ripping and tearing/layering effect and the above techniques mentioned...also once they are working, go around and how them the different techniques one on one or in smaller groups

my paperbag scrapbooks look like this- paperbag scrapbooks

yeah I suggest really also talking to them about capturing/journaling
the moments. Things they are really going to want to know/read about
when they are older. I agree the paper bag albums are SUPER easy.
Also using the big manila envelopes is great cause you can stick memorabilia inside the envelope!!! SO you do pics and journaling from the event/ then place ticket stubs/etc inside the envelope that page was created on!!!

I think you've got some good suggestions here, so I'll give you suggestions on how to keep their interest while making the project. The reason I say this is because when teaching young children anything you are probably teaching an array of levels of learning in one classroom even if they are the same age.
First make sure you have all the supplies handy for them and display the project where they can see it. This covers your visual learners.
Explain throughly the entire project from start to finish before they even begin (this helps weed out those who can pick up on it real easy and go) and depending on the age give them an instruction sheet to have near them. This is again covering your visual learners.
So after you have explained it all tell them you will now go through the project step by step and will assist them whenever needed. This is for Kinesthetic learners and auditory learners.
As you are still teaching you'll begin to notice that some of the children will complete it a lot faster, so maybe have another busy work type project or sheet for them to do or maybe ask them to be your assistant.
Usually these projects are never boring, but if you see a disgruntled group maybe liven it up every 15 min. with a game.

I hope this helps, sorry so long.
