Hi Ladies -

My momma gave me a TON of old pictures of my family, grandma from the 30's and 40's and dad from the 60's and 70's, but she doesn't want me using the "original." So.... I have a scanner, its a pretty good one, but I don't know if that is the best way to make copies or should I take them somewhere? Advice, tips? Anything you can tell me would be fabulous!! I totally appreciate it! Thank you thank you!!

xoxo
Aimee

I don't have a scanner, but I actually tok pictures of my vintage orginals. works, but it's alittle hard to get it straight sometimes.
I also edit them, so I can choosemy colors, sometimes b&w and sometimes sepia.
Sorry, just balbling about..
I would definitely try scanning them!

i'd scan them... if you're comfortable with your scanner it's not too hard. If you're familiar with photo editing programs you could even color correct the older ones... If you've got sepia toned photos and want to keep that tone, scan in color.

it just costs so much to have someone else do it, kwim?

Most big photo shops will do the scanning for you and save them to a disc. The local Kodak guy even does the color correction and repairs to fix folds and things. If the photos are unreplaceable, you might like the security of keeping them at home.

The instructions with your scanner would have some basic directions, you want to scan at a high resolution and set up a decent directory and labelling system so you can find things.

We recently scanned up all of my parents albums 1920's through till today. Huge effort but in the end we were able to share electronic copies of the family history with the whole clan.

You might want to start on a small group or collection to keep the project under control and not feel overwhelmed. Good luck !

I also scan them and use PSP to optimize them... It's works out good!
You do have to scan them on a big resolution, so you can reprint them again!

Good Luck! so you have a lot to scrap soon... ;-)

I scanned mine and edited simular to what some of the other SISters mentioned. I'm so glad I did too because I saved them all to a file on my computer and now I have them to burn copies for family. I highly recommend doing it.

I've started scanning all my pics starting with the day my first daughter was born in '83...my scans come out almost grainy and spotted - is the resolution the problem? I never knew I could change the resolution of the scan. I have an HP scanner...can you change the resolution on all scanners?

I take my old photos to the store and use one of those Kodak kiosk's to scan them and fix them and print a copy in whatever size I want. It works out well for me but I don't do that with ALL my old photos. I imagine having a ton of them to do would add up.

You should be able to change the resolution on the scanners. I got my photos to come out pretty good. I have an HP scanner also and it asks me if I want to print the photos or if they're for the web, and if you go into options and settings, you can play with the resolution.

Hope this helps.

Mine came out really well... even printed. I did one layout, its in my gallery if you want to see and i posted some of the other pics on my blog.

I just sent about 500 family photos off to a company to scan and I was very pleased with the quality. I ordered DVDs of the photos (so I can whatever I want to them now) and an index book. I highly recommend sending them out. INMHO, it's worth the money given the time and pain.

i personally would take them to a photshop and have them done...usually they will fix problems if any for you and then save them to a disk for a minimal amount...that is my suggestion

I usually scan them and use Photoshop to clean them up, fix any scratches or other damage and correct the color.
