Hi there!!
I have a question for the Godesses of the altered stuff :-D
I've just bought a few inexpensive children's board books that I'd like to alter. Since the pages are kind of glossy, do I have to do something before I paint them or glue paper to them? Sand them? ??
Do you have any example?
Thanks in advance :)

Hello ! I usaually peel off the glossy page, and then apply gesso on it to get a regular prepared page, all the same, I do know girls who paint them all with acrylic; the process is worth the time spent though, you get better effect of paint or ink or embossing after the gesso has dried; surely some fashionitas will have tips for you, I'm not very experienced, i do like to use old cardboard books, I glu patterned paper on which i do the pages (so brads won't show thru) on the pages after gesso has dried. Hope I've helped you ! smiles Helen

I love these board books! I usually just sand the pages down with sandpaper, then add some gesso, and them have at it!

I don't do anything. I just glue my paper right over the top. I make these all the time and haven't had any problems. I use Zip Dry Glue.

they are so fun to do, i normally pull off the glossy picture and use it as a blank book. or i sand it a bit, or just stick mypaper right on over it, with double sided tape. thats the main way cos im a lazy scrapper hehe. yoiu can also sand the edges of the paper so they kind of melt/blend into the book :D
goodluck with it!!

you can definitly get less expensive and smaller tubs at an art store
and as others have noted i usually sand and then gesso but i usually like the old images to peek through and show a subtle shadow

i sand it first if i don't plan on applying paper. make sure to add gesso first b/c i tried it before i bought gesso and my paint peeled off pretty easily (i scrapped my nail over it). i have been covering mine w/paper since then. i also tear the binding off so i have individual pages and punch a hole and attach a ring. i left the board together and didn't lay the pages flat and the inside pages wrinkled. (does that make sense?)
can't wait to see what u do!

Hey Kerry Lynn, how do you make that happen? I just got a board book with really cute pictures and I hate to nix the illustrations altogether, so this sounds like a great idea.

For the dutchies over here, I was told that you can get gesso at the Action for € 1,80. Don't know it's true, but I think I go and take a look for my self. You'le never know.

Yes very true and it's a LARGE one too!
Natasja (on this board) had just altered a great child-book! You should check it out! I think it was going to the zoo...
